You wouldn’t lock your door to paying customers—so why make your business inaccessible? From malls to hospitals to airports, blind and low vision people want to shop, travel, and spend just like everyone else.
Accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s revenue.

🎉 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Our Foundation, Our Future 🌟

In light of recent developments affecting DEI efforts across government organizations, we want to make something abundantly clear: BSidesChicago will never deny our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 💪

From day one, we’ve prided ourselves on being one of the most diverse, welcoming, and inclusive security conferences around. Whether you're a seasoned professional, a curious newcomer, or exploring cybersecurity for the first time, you are welcome here—just as you are. 🌈

Diversity isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s what makes our community thrive. We believe the most innovative ideas come from a mix of perspectives, and the best solutions are born when everyone has a seat at the table. At BSidesChicago, we celebrate our differences because they unite us in building a stronger, smarter, and more secure world. 🌍

To those affected by recent changes, know this: You belong here. 💜 Let’s continue to show the world that the cybersecurity community is a beacon of inclusion, curiosity, and collaboration.

We’re proud to stand by these values, and we’ll never stop fighting for them. 🦩🔥

Disruption fuels progress—but at what cost? From inaccessible ridesharing to aviation designs that isolate, innovation often leaves people with disabilities behind. It’s time to rethink what we break and rebuild. Discover why accessibility is the true measure of progress in Part 1 of my series: The Hidden Cost of Disruption.

Disruption drives innovation, but who gets left behind? In our race to 'move fast and break things,' accessibility is often overlooked—turning progress into barriers for millions. It's time to rethink innovation and make inclusivity the cornerstone of true disruption.

Discover how accessibility can fuel creativity, resilience, and growth in my new series starting this week.

As the year comes to a close, I want to reflect on an incredible journey in 2024 filled with meaningful projects, inspiring collaborations, and opportunities to push the boundaries of accessibility, inclusion, and innovation.

One of the highlights was visiting Google’s Accessibility Discovery Center in London with Björn Lubetzki. Thanks to the European Disability Forum for funding this trip, which allowed Bridge the Gap to explore innovative assistive technologies and engage in inspiring discussions on the future of accessibility.

Presenting *Crip Sensorama* with Puneet Jain at the Ars Electronica Festival was a moment to rethink accessibility through creativity and technology. Collaborating with the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) on the XR project *Probing XR’s Futures* opened exciting new possibilities for exploring interaction paradigms and narratives around disability.

At TEDNext 2024, I explored deeper conversations around Disability Culture, accessibility, and innovation. In November, I was honored to hold a workshop on digitalisation at *Kommune Inklusiv*, a conference by Aktion Mensch. Discussions there emphasized the need for digital accessibility to be integral from the start.

Joining the European Network on Independent Living for the Freedom Drive in Brussels and engaging in events like *Praxiszeit Personal* and *LiebesLeben* were powerful opportunities to share ideas, learn, and connect.

2024 has been a year of growth and collaboration, fueled by the passion of incredible individuals and organizations. Thank you to everyone who supported and shared this journey. Together, we’re breaking barriers and shaping a brighter, more inclusive future.

I'm considering writing a #Blog post about how #Technology can be more #Accessible and #Inclusive for people with #Disabilities and #ChronicIllness. One example that comes to mind is the need for more personalized customization in health tracking features on #Wearables like the #AppleWatch.

For me, the exercise and stand goals aren’t realistic due to my health limitations. On bad days, the constant reminders to move can feel discouraging rather than motivating. While there’s the option to turn notifications off entirely, I still want to track my movement or standing progress in a more flexible way. It would make a huge difference if the activity rings and goals could be fully customizable to accommodate individual abilities and needs.

To my fellow #Disabled and #ChronicPain warriors: What other areas do you think tech could be more inclusive? Whether it’s device features, apps, or software design, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Would you also be okay with me including your name or username and a quote from you in the blog post? I want to uplift your voices as part of the conversation.

Although this post is meant to elevate disabled voices, developers, designers, and usability experts are welcome to join the discussion and learn how to create more inclusive tech.

Let’s brainstorm ways to make tech work better for everyone! 🌟 Thank you in advance for sharing your insights!

December 3 is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities
#IDPD. This day promotes an understanding of disability issues, and mobilizes support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of people with disabilities.

We're big into this kind of support - it's one of the principles (perhaps the most crucial principle!) upon which our event was founded.

I’m feeling discouraged today. Studying for exams is terrifying for me, and I’m struggling with anxiety around it. To make things harder, I’ve had issues contacting one of my subject coordinators about extra time accommodations. Accessibility services told me to reach out to the coordinators, and while one replied, the other hasn’t. I contacted them Saturday and again yesterday but still haven’t heard back. I’ve contacted disability services for advice, but I’m worried my accommodations might not be upheld.
