I think desktop and mobile application developers could learn something from game designers. Think about the game UI/UX interaction, and HUD elements for things like character health, energy levels, and points earned. This could be translated into things like cart items, articles read, and account totals. These UI features are the things that we should gamify — not the dark psyops manipulation that big tech use to trick users.

@leanlearnlead see, this kind of feature regression on top of being more expensive is why #ElectricCars suck in terms of #UX!

  • Whereas any gas station I've ever been to (informal road stalls on Siquijor don't count!) accept cash & card without hassles.

The fact that on top of being slower to load than gas up it's less convenient makes it a no-go for me as I'm not privileged to own a house where I can get a #Wallbox installed!

I did a lot of editing on this gradient. Duplicated a built-in preset, added my colour stops, moved them around, changed the segments' colour spaces and blending functions, edited the colours a whole lot, etc.

The entire undo history GIMP gives me is one item: "Gradient" - and it's not even editing the gradient, it's the action of putting it in the canvas.

That's a fundamental, gross UX failure.

🕒 What if countdowns weren’t circles?

Today I had this random idea during a convo with a friend:
“What if a countdown looked like a triangle?”

Turns out… shapes make progress more visible than a circle.
So I prototyped it in Timix — triangle, square, hexagon… each side is a timer.

Would love your thoughts!

Techies are always chasing the mythical tool that will let them "focus on the work" and avoid tedious distractions like "talking to people." AI tools are only the latest to promise this impossible dream.

But talking to people IS the work. You can complain about it on the internet, or take responsibility and make your life a lot easier.

LLMs are not the first tool to promise that they can free us from having to talk to people so we can "focus on the work." But talking to people IS the work.

GrapheneOS uses the stock Android launcher (unlike my old phone). It always shows this weird line at the bottom (not sure if I can switch it off). I believe it's a reminder that gestures are activated.

Today I noticed something: it changes its color depending on the background below for maximum contrast.

It's cool because its a sign for the attention for details that went into the interface design. And I love good interface design.

#UX In their ongoing attempts to make our lives worse, the product team of #microsoftoutlook for their online offering of #office365 have decided to remove the option to place the archive button on the smaller toolbar. It's available in the larger one and on the email-specific action bar. And you still can activate it using a keyboard shortcut.

This isn't about saving screen real-estate: in my set-up, the email-specific action bar has several buttons that are duplicated in the smaller toolbar.
