Tip of the day: Whether due to a physical infirmity or just a product of getting older, viewing things on screen can become more difficult. Changing the interface isn’t something that’s simply done and everyone has their own level of correction needed. Here are a few ways to make things a bit easier on your eyes. #accessibility #devonthink #devonthinktogo #ios #macos #pkm #productivity #tipoftheday devontechnologies.com/blog/202

"experience has taught me that “eat your vegetables” is one of the least effective arguments in the world. [..]

So in this post, I would like to list some of my personal, completely selfish reasons for building accessible UIs. No finger-wagging here: just good old hardheaded self-interest!"

Read the Tea Leaves · Selfish reasons for building accessible UIsAll web developers know, at some level, that accessibility is important. But when push comes to shove, it can be hard to prioritize it above a bazillion other concerns when you’re trying to c…

Sheri Byrne-Haber points out that some disability-related orgs use overlays and as a result you should probably not trust those orgs:

Granted, the first org in that list is Autism Speaks, so shrug emoji?

www.linkedin.comAutism Speaks. | Sheri Byrne-Haber (disabled)Autism Speaks. United Spinal Association. Special Olympics. @Sins Invalid. What do they have in common? They are all organizations that claim to be allies of people who are neurodiverse or have disabilities. Every single one of them uses an overlay on their websites. Overlays are shortcuts that don’t resolve accessibility barriers created through sloppy coding practices. They create a false sense of compliance, often interfering with assistive technology and user experience. Overlay companies are notorious for overselling their capabilities. One just got fined $1 million by the FTC "for Deceptive Claims that its AI Product Could Make Websites Compliant with Accessibility Guidelines." Significant damage occurs when disability advocacy organizations rely on overlays instead of intentionally designing their sites to be accessible. These are the groups that *should* know better. These are the sites disabled people and their friends and families are *more* likely to visit. These are the organizations that are *trusted* to model good access practices. These are the non-profits who shout "you matter" to the public, while whispering privately behind the scenes, "not really." When a digital experience from a trusted non-profit isn’t safe, usable, or independently functional, that trust evaporates. If your accessibility efforts involve a third-party widget, you are absolutely deluding yourself if you think that work ever really took off the ground. Disabled people deserve better, especially from organizations that fundraise based on claims they are here to support us. #AccessibilityMotivationalMonday #AccessibilityOverlaysDontWork #DisabilityAdvocacyFail #Accessibility #RealAccessibilityMatters #Inclusion #Overlays #Disability #DisabilityInclusion #TrustAndAccessibility

There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.
For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU
