Derrière ce dispositif innovant, une équipe de chercheurs de l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, désormais soutenue par une startup fraîchement lancée pour porter ce projet à grande échelle. Le principe est aussi limpide qu’un verre d’eau, il suffit de plonger Spikeless dans n’importe quelle boisson — alcoolisée ou non — pour vérifier si elle a été trafiquée. Grâce à une pointe en bioplastique recouverte d’un réactif chimique, le bâton change de couleur en présence de drogues courantes utilisées lors de soumissions chimiques, comme le GHB ou la kétamine. Le résultat est visible en 30 secondes, sans altérer la boisson ni laisser de trace. Conçu pour être jetable, écologique, et discret, Spikeless ambitionne de s'imposer comme un geste réflexe, au même titre que mettre une capote ou attacher sa ceinture. L’objet, petit et pratique, peut facilement être distribué dans les festivals, les bars, les boîtes de nuit, et les campus. Le projet a été lancé il y a plus de dix ans par le Dr Johan Foster, professeur à UBC, et son frère Andrew, alertés par la montée des cas d’agressions liées à la soumission chimique. Mais c’est l’arrivée de Samin Yousefi, étudiant en doctorat, qui a permis de transformer l’idée en un produit concret, abordable et prêt à être industrialisé. « On voulait un outil qui ne ressemble pas à un gadget ou à un test médical visible. Quelque chose de naturel, discret, facile à utiliser. Un bâton d’agitation, ça ne fait pas peur », explique Yousefi dans un reportage diffusé par UBC News. Face à l’enthousiasme suscité par les premiers prototypes, les créateurs ont fondé une startup dédiée pour lancer la production à plus grande échelle. Équiper les établissements à risque, tout en rendant Spikeless accessible au grand public. Des partenariats avec des festivals, chaînes de bars et municipalités sont actuellement en discussion. Selon l’équipe, les premières commandes pourraient être livrées d’ici la fin 2025, notamment au Canada, aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni, où les besoins sont criants. Une commercialisation en Europe est également envisagée, avec une adaptation aux normes locales de santé et de sécurité. La question des drogues du viol — ou “soumission chimique” — est devenue un enjeu de santé publique majeur. Selon l’Observatoire national des violences faites aux femmes (France), les signalements liés à la soumission chimique ont triplé entre 2019 et 2023. En France, au Royaume-Uni, au Canada, les témoignages affluent, et la demande de solutions concrètes se fait pressante. Avec Spikeless, l’équipe de chercheurs veut changer la donne, en rendant le contrôle visible, instantané et accessible, elle espère instaurer une nouvelle norme sociale, où la sécurité ne repose plus uniquement sur la méfiance ou le silence, mais sur l’action collective. Dans un monde où la prévention passe souvent par la technologie, Spikeless propose une approche simple, inclusive et peu coûteuse. Une avancée pragmatique, qui donne du pouvoir aux usagers et pose les bases d’une nouvelle culture du consentement. Si les tests en laboratoire se confirment en usage réel, ce petit bâton pourrait bien devenir un standard dans les établissements festifs, au même titre que les extincteurs ou les caméras de sécurité.
