#distrobox

Greetings he's, she's, they's and everybody else. Apparently there's a glitch in the matrix, and if you're a #Kalpa user, and use #Tumbleweed within a #Distrobox, when you run a dup for that distrobox, you're going to end up with the package `xkeyboard-config` trying to eat all your CPUs, as it's getting stuck in an infinite loop.

Care to share what extensions you have installed and why?

I use #debian and despite playing around in a VM for multiple different distros, as well as #debian with multiple different DEs, I end up staying with #xfce on #debain stable (well in truth I am now on #trixie given the stability and imminent release).

I like a lot of things about #gnome, but struggle with a couple of key areas - the file manager in terms of customisation and fixed viewing styles, and strange as this may seem I'm against things like #flatpak because I feel things should be native and integrated.

That said, I'm having to use #distrobox and some containers as #trixie doesn't have two key apps for me - #dvbcut which was in #bookworm but isn't in #trixie, and #avidemux which hasn't been in #debian for years now.

I really want to move to either #gnome or #kde, but #kde is far too unstable for my liking and that's a showstopper. Often my desktop is on for weeks or months at a time.

This is the first time I have run any version of OpenSUSE on bare metal.

I've done quite a few in VMs, but never on a daily driver before.

Things that should be in an atomic/immutable distro are here, and I wanted to see how well it all works (automatic updates for base system, Flatpak and Distrobox, Tumbleweed-style rolling release, btrfs ... and those Distroboxes created with a Tumbleweed base)

Antwortete Kalpa Desktop

Good luck with it, Shawn. I look forward to being able to watch the video afterwards, if one is available.

Pls may i ask you two #Kalpa questions that have been on my mind for a very long time?

  1. I have installed #ConkyManager in an Arch #Distrobox i created. It works well, except that i have no idea how to make DB apps respect my normal Plasma settings to autostart with the desktop... i always must manually launch it every time i reboot & login. Are DB apps unable to autostart with Plasma?
  2. Afaict, you have configured Kalpa to automatically check in the background for system updates, & d/l + install them if available. Ofc they will not be applied til the system is rebooted. However, as a rule i do not routinely shutdown then later cold start this VM, instead i Suspend it between uses. How can i know if updates have been prepared, & a reboot is needed? Can you pls consider adding some kind of Notification for this?

Thanks.

Does anyone has experience with #Distrobox?
I’m thinking about trying it. I rather try new software separately first instead direct on my system. In the past I had to uninstall and remove SW partly manually after figuring out it’s not working properly.
Also: My parents will have another distro on their computer than I have. So I can check out things for them on my PC in Distrobox first.

So the major question is: Is running a system in Distrobox really like running it native on a computer?

This is my new coding setup: An Arch (btw…) Distrobox on Fedora Silverblue running Zellij with a custom layout. Most of the space is used for helix. On the right I have bacon running clippy or check and a shell. It's bash for now, but I will probably switch to fish again in the future.

All this is launched, when I enter the alias `hxc`. I only need some project-picker now. Does anyone have a recommendation?

I've been using Fedora 42 KDE edition since it's gotten into beta on March 18 and it's a breeze! Rock solid, zero problems so far and amazing and up to date software.

Linux Kernel 6.14 :linux:
KDE Plasma 6.3 :kde:
MESA graphics library 25.0.3
fish shell version 4.0.1 🐠
Podman 5.4 :podman:
Gimp 3.0

It's awesome to use and performance on both my primary machines (A Lenovo ThinkPad T480 and a Lenovo ThinkPad T14s gen4 AMD) is just perfect.

Will probably stay on 42 for ~1-2 months before things get overly boring and I update to Rawhide again 🙂

Also running a RHEL10 beta (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) container via Podman and Distrobox.

#fedora#redhat#rhel

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 Beta (RHEL10) running in Distrobox/Podman on a Fedora host-system.

When registering the host-system with subscription-manager, the guest becomes a real RHEL instead of a UBI, enabling all the package repositories.

I used to spend time updating individual Toolbox instances with apt or dnf. My new method is to nuke ALL OF THEM and the images that made them and start from scratch with new images on a fairly regular basis.

Still wondering if I shouldn't just layer Distrobox and make my life (comparatively) easier.

#Toolbox#Toolbx#Distrobox

I have installed #davinciresolve in a #distrobox container on my computer and so far it is working fine.
The only thing I have not been able to resolve is that I get a super tiny mouse pointer despite the rest of the UI scaling correctly.
I have tried environment variables such as `QT_SCALE_FACTOR=2` but have had no luck.
I am using GNOME with Wayland on a 4k display.
Does anyone have any tips for me? Thanks in advance! 🫣😊🤓

One thing I have from immutable (atomic) distros, and is how cumbersome is installing apps that require root permissions.

Supposedly you have to use Distrobox. Even that never worked for me. I always have to resort to `rpm-ostree` and then uninstall it so BootC can update the system. Every single time.
