Before torrents, before FTP, before high-speed — we had Xmodem, Express! Term, and a whole lot of watching this screen..

If you were there, you know the thrill of waiting 40 minutes for a cracked copy of Donkey Kong to transfer without corrupting.

The saga continues: #BitVise blocked my IP range but still doesn’t seem to grasp what a VPN or proxy is. CEO Denis B. keeps using the site for PR instead of handing it over to the rightful owner. https://blog.pupred.com/category=bitvise/

This Queer Online Zine Can Only Be Read Via an Ancient Internet Protocol • 404 Media
「 The digital zine is accessible on the web via a browser-based Telnet client, or if you’re a purist like me, via the command line. As the intro promises, each text piece changes—adapts—depending on various conditions, like what time of day you access it or how many times you’ve viewed it 」

This is rad. It’s a queer digital zine called New Session that’s published via Telnet.
Co-founder/editor Cara Esten Hurtle notes:
“The project isn’t just retro novelty—it’s a radical rejection of the addictive social media and algorithmic attention-mining that have defined the modern day internet.”
(Hat tip @404mediaco: https://www.404media.co/queer-online-zine-new-session-telnet/)
Apparently there's a queer zine (https://anewsession.com/) that's only available over telnet! 404 media did a story about it (https://www.404media.co/queer-online-zine-new-session-telnet/) which is how I found it.
You can access it at `telnet issue3.anewsession.com` (or issue1/issue2), and they also have web links to a telnet emulator if you want to read it in the browser.

@patterfloof except I target machines that I can barely #telnet / #ssh into and may not even allow me to run arbitrary code...
Quick local purchase 130XE with a nice RamRod OmniMon and OmniView upgrade. Very clean install from back in the 80’s. Rare find these days!

Spring-cleaning at @Wintermute_BBS continues!
I've replaced the rather dull #ANSI menus I once designed in a hurry and without any creative idea (I never liked those) with some "new old stock".
See, there were several ANSI screens I had designed many years ago but for various reasons did not put into use even though I liked the way they turned out (mind you, I'm not a real ANSI artist)
So now I put some effort into making them fit with #MBSEBBS so that you people can enjoy them.
The screenshot of the message area menu is a just a little teaser, there are many more screens but I'm not going to spoil the fun ...
... and of course, I've preserved the iconic "red pin" ...

#Telnet is like bareback #SSH - #cathoderaydude
I almost choked on my food as I was eating supper when I heard this tonight! Literally the best IT joke I’ve heard in too long!
So I've given this script a try after having to change the code for generating the dosbox.conf files for each indiviual node.
As you can see, there are now two SyncTerm session connected to the telnet server script (the Perl script) which in turn spawned two DOSbox instances serving ProBoard BBS...
... yay?!
NO! Although things seem to work, there are two caveats here:
1.) There is no file locking (like SHARE.EXE) active, so there's the chance of two concurrent users writing to the same file at the same time, corrupting data.
2.) These are two seperate DOSbox instances. Each with its own #Fossil driver loaded. Instance A does not know about the user logged in on instance B and vice versa. So it's not possible to do node chat or any other multi-user stuff this way.
But I'm not giving up that fast. All I need is one single DOSbox instance with *two* serial ports, which the BNU.COM Fossil driver can handle. And something like DesqView/X to be able to run two nodes concurrently within this single instance. Just like the big boys did back in the day...
... we'll see ...
