May 6, 2025 is US Teachers Appreciation Day
Most of the public school teachers who taught, or attempted to teach, my special daughter are among the people I admire most for their deep empathy and patience. I have attached a rather long video of a speech about teaching by Kay Redfield Jamison, an award-winning author and teacher with an impressive list of career accomplishments.
I also have another teacher friend in mind, a university professor, who is renowned for her dedication to students. She has high empathy and high expectations. One student recently wrote, “honestly, the sweetest professor I've ever had! She is an extremely tough grader. She is that way because she wants you to understand and be able to apply the information.” Several years ago, a student of hers got news that her brother was in a hospital ICU after being hit by a car, 800 miles away in another state. She told the student to pack a bag, drove the student in her own car to visit the brother over a long weekend where she paid for a motel room, and drove back in time for classes the following week. That is who she is—the best person I have ever known. #Teaching #Teachers #Psychology #Education #MentalHealth
