After three years of relentless tracking, we’ve published a [paper](blogs.infoblox.com/threat-inte) that, for the first time, exposes the true identities behind VexTrio. This research connects real names to the various companies that form the VexTrio ecosystem. It begins with the origin story—how a group of Italians launched a successful spam and dating business. Over time, VexTrio expanded its operations into malicious adtech and online scams. For over a decade, the group employed deceptive tactics to defraud countless innocent internet users. These illegitimate gains funded the extravagant lifestyles of VexTrio’s key figures—who, despite increasing scrutiny, have yet to be fully stopped.

We’re deeply grateful to all the contributors who helped us reach this research milestone, especially @rmceoin and Tord from [Qurium](qurium.org/).

Matt Taylor began to feel like he was getting too many push notifications from the BBC News app, so he decided to investigate how these alerts work, how they differ around the world, and what clues you can pick up about media trends from them. So he downloaded 61 international news apps on an old phone, signed up for push notifications on all of them, and then used ChatGPT to build a script that uploads their text to a server and a Bluesky page. NiemanLab talked to him about what he learned. We want to know: What's your perspective on push notifications for news?

  • I've ported UnifiedPush to Firefox, so it can receive background notifications using the service you want, specially useful for PWA (installable web application)
  • ntfy provides a PWA
  • So I can receive ntfy notifications with their PWA through any push service, for instance using Sunup :D

Has anyone found notification delays using @GrapheneOS and @unifiedpush ?

I'm using @nextcloud app #NextPush to connect @element , @davx5app and @Fedilab . It all worked fine previously (was using @LineageOS back then) and I still get notifications, but often not until hours later.

For example, I have a message on Element Web from half and hour ago, that still hasn't showed up via #UnifiedPush. I've allowed background operation and all permissions.

It's 2024, I've built hybrid apps that allowed for push notifications on iOS, Safari has native Web Push, and I still don't understand how push notifications work.

Why can't some Android apps receive push notifications without Google Services? Why should push notifications have to go through a third party? Why does this suck so bad? How do we fix this?
