Machine Listening will present their new composition : "Environments 12"

Environments 12 is a new, speculative addition to the once-popular Environments series: a sequence of 11 records released between 1969 and 1979 that anticipated a mass-market in mood-altering nature recordings. The composition presents a world in which the environment itself has been updated. In this world, the reproduction, synthesis and management of soundscapes has become ubiquitous and planetised. Loudspeakers and microphones are laced through the biosphere, all in the name of a cybernetic ecology.

Unfolding across a series of historical, contemporary, and speculative scenes, the work is narrated by an ensemble of vocal performers and their generative voice clones. Together, this more-than-human chorus tells and retells stories of ‘psychologically ultimate seashores’, reef lullabies, natural symphonies designed for zoo enclosures, and large language models for whales and crows. A collection of songs and fables recovered from the ruins of a future history.

Créé en 2020 par les artistes-chercheurs Sean Dockray, James Parker et Joel Stern, Machine Listening est une plateforme de recherche collaborative et d'expérimentation artistique, axée sur les dimensions politiques et esthétiques de l'informatique, du son et de la parole.

Outre la recherche, l'écriture et les installations artistiques, Machine Listening a produit un programme d'études élargi, conçu comme une expérience d'apprentissage collectif et come la formation d'une communauté ; une bibliothèque en ligne et des séries d'entretiens ; de nombreux événements en ligne et hors ligne, des conférences, des performances ; et un instrument conçu sur un navigateur web, pour créer, par le biais du texte, des compositions audiovisuelles.

This desktop manager is for me a nice balance between full keyboard control and great digitizer control. In my test KDE environment I have pulled in a number of critical Xfce components.

I will need to learn the new way in which KDE does these things so I can bring them back to my Xfce fvwm workflow

KDE gives me the possibility because I could do that decades to go

Sweating to shivering: Study finds rapid swings in temperature have increased

Flips between warm temperatures to cold and vice versa have become quicker, more frequent and more intense in recent decades, a new study shows.

"A September heat wave switching into a snowstorm over one day in the Rocky Mountains. Winter snowfall suddenly melting and saturating fields of dormant crops, before refreezing and encasing them in damaging ice. Early spring warmth prompting plants to blossom followed by a cold snap that freezes and drops their petals.

"Rapid temperature change events like these have increased in frequency and intensity over recent decades, a new study found.

"The transition periods for these abrupt temperature shifts have also shortened, according to the study, published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

"Because the quick changes in temperature give communities and ecosystems little chance to respond, they may pose greater challenges than heat waves or cold snaps alone, said #WeiZhang, an assistant professor of climate science at Utah State University and one of the lead authors of the study.

" 'The impact could really be cascading on a different level,' he said.

"The researchers warned these temperature flips could have damaging effects on people and natural #environments, including destruction of #crops, harm to #ecosystems and strains on #PowerInfrastructure. And #LowIncomeCountries, where there is less access to weather forecasting and infrastructure is less resilient, are more vulnerable.

"The researchers examined temperature data from 1961 to 2023 to identify global patterns in sudden weather shifts, where temperatures in an area either jumped from cold temperatures to warm or plunged from warm to cold within five days. They found that instances of these flips increased in more than 60% of regions they surveyed.

"The largest increases in frequency were observed in South America, West Europe, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. Some areas, including the polar regions, showed different behavior and experienced fewer events.

"While the climate mechanisms driving changes to these temperature-flip events are not yet fully understood, Zhang said, there is a significant trend showing that these events are becoming more frequent, stronger and quicker in many areas of the globe."

Families play a significant role in dispelling the myth that #Naturism is linked to sexuality. #Naturist #communities often welcome families, emphasising the importance of teaching children #BodyAcceptance & #respect for others. By growing up in these #environments, children learn that the #Naked #body is not something to be ashamed of or sexualised, but a #natural part of being human.
