GNOME 49 Beta released!

Two days ago, GNOME 49 Beta was released to the public, and it brought more stability improvements to different areas of the desktop environment and its applications that are developed independently. The two most important areas that were updated are GNOME Shell and GNOME Mutter, both of which are the most important elements of the GNOME desktop.

In contrast with the alpha version, the beta version brings more bug fixes and general improvements, including the following changes that were done to Mutter:

  • Reintroduce snippet caching
  • Implement the wl_fixes interface
  • Create MetaWaylandClient for every wl_client
  • Fix DND from X11 clients using tablet stylus
  • Respect implicit grab for popup surfaces
  • Fix handling of pad button actions of tablets
  • Implement the pointer warp protocol
  • Fixed crash
  • Misc. bug fixes and cleanups

Whereas the GNOME Shell 49 Beta got the following changes:

  • Fix showing pointer on motion on lock screen
  • Replace Evince with Papers in Utilities folder
  • Improve keyboard navigation in Extensions app
  • Use new libadwaita ShortcutsDialog in extensions app
  • Optionally allow restart/shutdown on lock screen
  • Fix taking interactive screenshots via D-Bus
  • Improve icon assets in accessibility menu on login screen
  • Group screenshot/screencast notifications
  • Fix pointer scaling glitches in magnifier
  • Fix drawing glitch in sliders in RTL locales
  • Overhaul UI for extension pref errors
  • Show per-monitor brightness sliders in quick settings
  • Misc. bug fixes and cleanups

According to Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka release schedule, GNOME 49 Beta will land to the daily builds of the upcoming version of the Linux-based operating system later this week.

The final release of GNOME 49 is expected to be done by September 13th, and the official announcement will be done on the 17th.

My reservations and criticism re: #Signal are not just valid, but the reality is even worse than I thought:

  • The fact that @signalapp requires not only their shitty #Android #App, and a #PhoneNumber but literally won't allow people to use their shitty #Desktop-App unless they have an Android device with a camera pointed at it makes it utterly unuseable for certain users who don't have a fucking #camera in their Android

Seriously, do they expect folks to deal with that shit?

FIX THAT SHIT, @Mer__edith, and if it means you need to kick some devs in their crouch then consider this a necessary "investment"

It looks like I have some difficulties choosing a #FreeBSD #desktop :)

#XFCE4 is kind of light, and has some lovely perks (use scroll wheel to reduce any window to its title bar, and to change virtual desktops). Thunar needs less tuning than Dolphin to match my preferences. And it’s easy to get rid of unwanted buttons in session menus (sleep/restart/shutdown… that I don’t need, for it’s an always on PC).

#Plasma6 is instantly gorgeous and is very appealing, I want to use it. But it looks like many bits are tuned for Linux out of the box and don’t work well / as intended on FreeBSD. For a start, there is a complete and detailed sound control panel that just won’t work, event though my sound is just working. And don’t let me start about the taskbar widgets. Also, it’s "heavier" than XFCE4.
I don’t understand its Keyboard control panel, by the way. I’ve lost a week to that thing trying to configure my KB layout before giving up and moving to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf

I feel more at home with XFCE4 but Plasma 6 in wearing a red dress!
