Okay, Chooms! One other pair of tools I need for #RedStarOS... I can use vbindiff to see hex differences between files (especially when it comes to showing how Red Star OS watermarks files that pass through it normally), but I also need a good hex editor that will allow snipping of data or files where I can grab the watermark (which is AES encrypted data) and try feeding that data through a decrypting tool to see what's actually in the watermark.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a Linux hex editor that can do what I need?

It is done. I have broken the control over Red Star OS.

Flushing the iptables to get rid of the firewall that blocks access out of the North Korean Intranet and also monitors network traffic, and getting the English language pack set as the default now means that Red Star OS is free to browse the internet and go wherever it wants to go! Hi, #9front; we're browsing you from a vintage reskinned and renamed #firefox browser!

More exploring of Red Star OS, this time on bare metal! A friend gave me a ThinkPad X61 equipped with a clean SSD and helped install Red Star OS onto it! And no need to worry; the WiFi isn't working out of the box, so this is an isolated install!

This setup has also been defanged using the redstar-tools "defuse.sh" script, and all files I'm copying to it are via Sneakernet; I'm using an SD card to copy between this ThinkPad and my main, setting the SD card to read-only when putting it into the X61.

With scnprc and opprc defused (the two main processes responsible for cleaning "malicious" files and file watermarking, respectively), no future files will be "watermarked" by Red Star when copied to it, unless I reinstall the OS with the processes back on.

Maybe I should get the Red Star OS ISO onto a USB stick next to bring its entire repo pack over, so I can install GCC and some dev libs. Also grab some source code to try and compile!
