“Although he was part of the team executing the warrant, Defendant Hankison did not shoot Ms. Taylor & is not otherwise responsible for her death,” the memo says. “Defendant Hankison did not wound her or anyone else at the scene that day, although he did discharge his duty weapon ten times blindly into Ms. Taylor’s home.”

The jury found that Hankison used #ExcessiveForce by firing 10 shots through #BreonnaTaylor’s apartment’s window & door, both covered with shades & curtains.

#BreonnaTaylor died weeks before the #Minneapolis police killing of #GeorgeFloyd. The deaths helped ignite nationwide protests seeking greater police #accountability over the use of #ExcessiveForce against #Black people.

Dhillon’s memo says the #DOJ *respects* the jury’s verdict & that the conviction means Hankison will probably never be able to serve as a police officer or own a firearm. [unless of course #Trump pardons him]

😱 Family member condemns use of #ArmoredVehicle, #StunGrenades in #PhoenixArizona #ICEArrest

Daniel Gonzalez, February 3, 2025

"A family member is speaking out against an #ICE operation in northwest Phoenix on Sunday, calling it an unnecessary use of force that involved an armored vehicle, flash bang grenades and several dozen ICE agents and police dressed in military-style gear to arrest a single person, a 61-year-old man in poor health.

"Sunday's arrest in Phoenix took place amid President Donald Trump's nationwide immigration crackdown launched just over two weeks ago on Trump's first day in office.

"Videos of the ICE operation show an armored vehicle equipped with a long #BatteringRam rolling through a residential neighborhood in daylight and then pulling up in front of a home as unmarked vehicles with sirens sounding and lights flashing zoom in and block off streets.

"As the battering ram lowers there is a sudden flash and explosion in front of the home followed by the voice of an officer over a police loudspeaker who says, 'This is the police with a warrant. Exit the residence immediately with your hands empty and above your head.' A second flash and explosion can be heard as the officer speaks.

"The videos were shared by #Marco =Garcia, the son of the man arrested; immigrant activist #NatallyCruz, director of #PuenteArizona; and others on social media."

3 Former Officers Found Guilty of Cover-Up in Tyre Nichols’s Death

The former officers were acquitted of the most serious charge in the case — violating Mr. Nichols’s #CivilRights by causing his death.

By Emily Cochrane and Ben Stanley
Reporting from Memphis.
Oct. 3, 2024

"Three former Memphis police officers were found guilty on Thursday of federal witness tampering charges in the violent beating of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died three days after his encounter with the police.
But all of the officers were acquitted of the most serious charge in the case — violating Mr. Nichols’s civil rights by causing his death. One officer, Demetrius Haley, was convicted on a lesser charge of violating Mr. Nichols’s civil rights by causing bodily injury.

"The mixed verdict in the federal trial in Memphis comes nearly two years after Mr. Nichols’s death, which sickened many across the nation, who viewed it as the latest example of a young Black man being subjected to #ExcessiveForce at the hands of the #police.

"Video of the January 2023 encounter showed that after Mr. Nichols fled a #TrafficStop, officers viciously punched and kicked him, ignoring his cries for his mother and his attempts to comply with a barrage of conflicting commands. None of the officers reported the extent of the beating.

"The three defendants, along with two other former officers who pleaded guilty to their role in the violence, still face additional state charges, including second-degree murder.

"Sentencing on the federal convictions is expected to occur in January.

"'You know what these officers did and know it because you saw it over and over again,' said Kathryn Gilbert, a Justice Department lawyer, in closing statements. 'You can use your eyes. You can use your ears. You can use your common sense. You know what these officers did.'

"The trial, which lasted about 17 days, exposed a culture of #secrecy and #violence within the #MemphisPolice Department, where officers held to an unspoken agreement that they could punish anyone who fled from them and downplay the violence. The five officers — all of whom are Black — were part of a team within the specialized Scorpion street crime unit, where arrest statistics and confiscations were a priority."

Once a jury is seated, prosecutors & defense lawyers will give their opening statements. The trial is expected to last ~3 wks.
2 of the officers involved in the beating — Desmond Mills Jr. & Emmitt Martin III — have pleaded #guilty to using #ExcessiveForce & a #WitnessTampering #conspiracy. As part of the plea agreements, the #DOJ recommended Martin face a sentence not to exceed 40 yrs in prison & Mills to face no more than 15 yrs.

#Justice investigators also found that the PHXPD violates the rights of the #homeless, improperly arresting them & destroying their #property.
