I'm excited to share our latest article, co-authored with Dr Cody Porter:
"Emotional witness effect: implications for memory accuracy, perceptions, misinformation, and credibility in forensic contexts"
Our research explores how a witness' emotional tone, and whether it aligns with gendered expectations, influences how credible, trustworthy, and accurate they are perceived to be.
👀 Key findings:
- Emotional witnesses can be judged as less credible, especially when their emotionality doesn’t match gender norms (e.g., an emotional male or an unemotional female).
- People judging emotionally expressive witnesses were more vulnerable to misinformation.
- Interestingly, an unemotional female witness yielded the most accurate recall, while a male witness (regardless of emotional tone) helped participants recall more suspect details.
⚖️ These initial results highlight the subtle but important influence of the emotion and gender interaction in forensic decision-making, and the potential biases that may affect judicial outcomes.

The study, conducted by the Muslim Council of Britain's Centre for Media Monitoring (CFMM), which monitors how the national media reports on Islam and Muslims, found that the BBC gives Israeli deaths 33 times more coverage than Palestinian ones.
According to its authors, the report “reveals a systematic omission of key historical and contemporary context that has acquired an institutional quality at the BBC”, including the genocidal rhetoric used by Israeli leaders – notably Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog - and a failure to scrutinise Israeli claims and denials.
