How to See Your Blindspots Before They Burn You
While this newsletter is free, membership helps support my work so that it can keep showing up in your inbox.

Last week we looked at how diversity improves decisions, today let's look at how we can improve our decisions when we're faced with personal decisions.

One of the first questions I ask when evaluating a decision is "what would it ta

I just found out that Dua Lipa is interviewing authors and she is soooo good!

"#DuaLipa in conversation with #HernanDiaz"

"In this episode, Hernan and Dua explore what it means to search for truth in a world of competing stories, how women have been systematically excluded from the history of money and power, and why silence can sometimes be more revealing than words."

Diversity matters if you want good decisions
Let's start with the point that Steven Johnson makes over and over in Farsighted, if you want to make good decisions the diversity in background, gender, all other factors...matters.

Homogenous groups - whether they are united by ethnic background, gender, or some other worldview like politics - tend to come to decisions too quickly

Interesting. I also feel that members should commit to actually reading the monthly book; I left my last book group because almost no one was doing that.

silk, silver, spices, slaves book discussion with lio mangubat! 🙌🏾 these "lost tales" are really ones I've never heard of before. (the otter fur trade in manila? filipino gangsters in shanghai? francis ford coppola getting absolutely traumatized by philippine weather?) the event featured a chapter reading (sultan of broadway), a spirited q&a, and an activity on "philippinitis." follow @/beachreads.kap (beach house kapitolyo) for more events! upcycled blouse by me.

The inaugural offering on The Great Mastodon Book Club FREECYCLE!! 🚀

Iain M. Banks - Inversions

Please DM if you would like me to send this to you - for free! Please don't send me your address via DM.

By doing so you *agree*

to read the book

and

then make it available in a post similar to this one for someone else

and

that you will cover postage to them!

This is a GIFT CULTURE! ❤️

NO MONEY SHOULD CHANGE HANDS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

Cheap paperbacks only please!

🙏

Anyone interested in an Mastodon book club based around passing books on?

The 'sender' pays the postage.

The 'recipient' promises to read the book and pay for the postage to the next person.

A chapter for each country to keep postage the same for everyone, the national postal service e.g. Royal Mail - no so-called 'couriers' that exploit their workers.

Inexpensive paperbacks only.

Probably lots of details to work out, but, as an idea - yay - or nay?

I am going to host a little book club to read/work through @charliejane Never Say You Can’t Survive. Would you like to join me? This will look like five zoom chats (one per section) with time to chat plus some time to write together (so probably a 90 minute zoom call). Probably weekly, probably starting within the next couple weeks, probably at a time that works for Australia and Turtle Island. If you’re into it, send me your email and I’ll send you the invite. #BookClub

Who remembers the classic young adult story 'Underground to Canada' by Barbara Smucker?

I'm sure some of you read 'Underground to Canada' when you were teens and it's worth revisiting if you did.

For those who haven't read it, please do check it out and you're also welcome to share your thoughts.
