I co-edit an edited volume about early modern Nordic peace. Regardless the great contributions of the authors in terms of content, I am always surprised how difgicult it is for most academics to apply style sheets. This is especially true for those who are nitpicking when it comes to the work of others and especially students.

Style sheets are not voluntary or for cherry-picking.

Looking for silver linings.

The idea of a transcontinental railroad caught fire in the late 1840s, when New York merchant Asa Whitney presented a plan to Congress.

Then Whitney published a pamphlet explaining the idea to the public and the idea took hold.

The government sent engineers out west to evaluate five proposed routes for the railroad.

💃A dancing Maenad is our pick this #FrescoFriday. This stunning figure comes from a fresco from the Casa del Naviglio in Pompeii and is now held in the MAN Napoli.

Maenads were followers of Dionysus (or as the Romans knew him, Bacchus). This maenad appears be dressed in the most delicate and diaphanous robes that follow the movements of her form. She appears here as if floating in the air against a dark background which accentuates the ethereal air. She holds forth a narrow staff which is likely a thyrsus. In her other hand she holds what might be a mirror or dish. Her look is completed with a wreath and she seems to smile from across the many centuries.

The Ex Church of Saint Barbatianus / L'Ex Chiesa di San Barbaziano for #windowfriday

There was a monastery here in 1123 and some sources even saying there has been religious settlements since the 5th century. In the 17the century it was reconstructed by the Girolamini order (you can see the date 1610 above this window). It's a deconsecrated church and has been closed since 1806. However it's been under reconstruction since 2019 so it may be open again soon to the public! ✨
