Hat zufällig wer von Euch ein Blackview Mega2 Tablet in Gebrauch? Gibt es gerade recht günstig auf diversen Seiten.

Die Reviews lesen sich brauchbar, natürlich kein Highend-Gerät.

Benötigen würde ich es für den Einsatz unterwegs. Mails, Blogging, ein wenig im Netz surfen und Zugriff auf die heimischen Server per VPN und SSH.

Nun hat das Tablet ein Android 15 drauf. Da ich seit mehreren Jahren auf meinen Phones #GrapheneOS habe, bin ich leider nicht up to date was die Entgooglebarkeit eines Wald-und-Wiesen-Tablets angeht.

Wie ist Eure Meinung zu dem Gerät und der aktuellen Situation bei A15?

@jonathan859 Unfortunately I don't think you can customise those gestures. Shame, considering how flexible #VoiceOver is really. I gather the #Zoom gestures on #Android are much easier to perform? From what I remember you could just double/triple-tap the screen with a single finger, but that info might be literally 10 years old (how long it's been since I held an Android tablet). Oh well. I wish you well on your #AndroidTablet journey! 👋

Worse is even the #Tablet market: #Android #Tablets may be plentyful if you just go sheer listings, but in terms of #MarketShare they are negigible in "the global north" and thus not interesting for #developers to even bother adapting or testing for unless they themselves are #GAFAMs.

  • It's really fucking sad when @thunderbird is one of the few #Apps that I know that properly use Android Tablets' screen estate at all. Allegedly #Microsoft's own Apps do so as well but I myself have no #AndroidTablet and can't bring myself over the gag reflex trying to sideload #OneNote or any other App and having to deal with yet another shitty account...

Whereas on #iPadOS you get AA+ and #IndieGames worth their money by a long shot.

  • Don't even get #developers like @fuchsiii started on how piss-poor premium Apps on #Android sell and how that Tablet segment is essentially dead outside of markets where people can buy a house and a years' worth of necessities for the price of a single #iPad...

And that's why there are only #PayToLoose / #P2L aka. "#PayToWin" / #P2W games for #Android as #piracy is rampant and statistically noone is willing to pay for a #OneTimePurchase #Game on that platform.

In the past, I've advocated for the purchase of Kindle Fire tablets to install google play on them to use D&D Beyond, if that's a toolset you make use of. (Otherwise, demiplane, reading pdfs, what-have-you.) However, on taking it to my most recent game, I discovered Amazon's come up with a new trick:

Their updates, which come frequently, uninstall google play and apps installed via it.

Now, this isn't much of a problem, overall. You can reinstall Play Services and redownload the books, takes a little time and that's it. But that's also kinda not the point. This was supposed to be a cheap and easy thing. It's why I've been a fan of the Kindle Fire sidegrade method for a while. Now it's become a little bit of a pain.

So, with that in mind I went off to find alternatives... and the android tablet market is *bleak.* Yes, there is the Pixel tablet, which will stop getting OS upgrades next year. Various other makers have their own tablets, but if I'm getting android, I want *full* android. And then there's the samsung set... and I'll be completely honest: I am *not* a samsung fan. I haven't been for a while. I would rather buy an ipad than a samsung, if that's any indication of how far gone that is for me. (And yes, I've considered an ipad.)

So, folks of the fediverse, what's your take? Any android tablets, preferrably ones that'll get OS updates if not security updates, that you prefer? Any straight up linux tablets out there worth even talking about? Cheaper, at this point, is better.
