Raptor’s Vigil

Charlie and I took a new route for this morning’s walk. My planned path was blocked, so we pivoted north instead of south. Near the turnaround point, I spotted two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), each perched in a different tree to the southeast. Unfortunately, getting closer wasn’t an option—some areas were fenced off, while others were thick with tall brush. Wearing shorts, I wasn’t about to wade through grass and foliage.

A buzzard perching in the scrub-wood beside the cycle path by the Water of Leith.

There were lots of people watching it - one of them said it had been around for a week or so, and that they thought it was probably going for an easy meal from others' fledglings.

I've noticed buzzards flying over Leith before, but never seen one perched there!

(Apologies for the poor phone pic - it's all I had with me!)

Eyes of the Forest

Charlie and I returned home from our morning adventure not long ago. During our walk, we spotted the same barred owl (Strix varia) we had seen last week, perched near the same spot along our route. This time, however, the owl was fleeing a group of harassing crows and blue jays. I only saw the crows, but I could hear the unmistakable calls of the blue jays. Just last week, someone mentioned that blue jays and mockingbirds can signal the presence of owls by their behavior. Sure enough, after a brief chase, the owl flew across the road and landed in a tree—just long enough for me to capture this shot. I'm pretty sure the owl spotted us too. ;-)

Hunter in Motion

It's always a rare treat when I spot an osprey (Pandion haliaetus). I've even managed to capture images of them with a fish a couple of times. Unfortunately, those shots are usually from too far away to reveal much detail. This image, however, is one of the most detailed I've captured of an osprey—so far. I spotted this bird soaring over the Gulf of Mexico from the beach in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Hunter’s Gaze

A few years ago, a Cooper’s hawk (Accipiter cooperii) settled on a limb overlooking my backyard bird feeders, surveying the scene with a hunter’s precision. I wanted to capture a close-up of its intense stare - an unyielding gaze that speaks of stealth and dominance. Though only its right eye is visible in this image, it unmistakably belongs to a predator, sharp and unwavering.

Barred Owl Blending with Nature

"At Last," the signature song of Etta James, is a timeless ode to love—but I find it fitting here in a different way: the love of birding. Merlin, the birding app, often detects the call of a barred owl (Strix varia), yet despite its presence, I had never actually seen one—until this morning, at last. As Charlie and I walked along a forest road, we inadvertently startled an owl, which landed nearby just long enough for me to capture some photos. No wonder they’re so elusive—their camouflage is flawless.
