I saw how they cut a big pig into pieces today, it was heartbreaking. I mean its better than slaughterhouses and I think the families shared it as there were many people gathering but it's so terrifying to see those dead eyes and to know that innocent life was taken. I wish more people would understand 😒

#PlantBasedTreaty has asked the UN to show climate action leadership by encouraging climate conferences to provide 100% plant-based catering.

They are at the Bonn Climate Conference giving out free vegan food and distributing their new position paper, 21 Cities call for a global Plant Based Treaty. The UN has published their submission on their website for the Global Stocktake of the #ParisAgreement.

www.drove.comMake COP29 VeganWe are asking the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to show climate action leadership by encouraging the hosts of COP29 to provide 100% plant-based catering and to create a policy for future climate conferences to offer 100% plant-based catering, ideally showcasing locally sourced vegan organic (veganic) and agroecological produce. In addition, we ask the UN to ensure their own summits, along with their cafeteria in New York City, provide 100% plant-based catering, following the example set under Mayor Eric Adam's initiatives to make New York City a plant-based city. Between 11 November and 22 November 2024, the United Nations will hold its 29th annual climate change conference in Baku, Abseron, Azerbaijan. More than 85,000 participants, including heads of state, government officials, industry leaders, academics, and representatives from civil society organizations, attended COP 28 in Dubai, which closed with an agreement that signals the “beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era according to UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell. The path was laid for a swift, just, and equitable transition, underpinned by deep emissions cuts and scaled-up finance. For the first time ever, COP28 featured a whole day devoted to food and agriculture, and saw a food systems road map laid out by the COP28 UAE declaration on sustainable agriculture, resilient food systems, and climate action. However, we need much more attention on food systems. The current global food system with expanding meat, dairy, and egg consumption is alarmingly transgressing planetary boundaries, risking food security, and harming human health and animal wellbeing. Even if fossil fuel emissions were halted today, emissions from the food system alone could increase global temperatures by more than 1.5ºC (Clark et al., 2020). A plant-based diet is the most climate-friendly diet and has been repeatedly endorsed by the IPCC. However, delegates at COP28 again struggled to access climate-friendly meals despite increased accessibility to plant-based foods. YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency of UNFCCC, sent a joint letter request for sustainable plant-rich catering at COP28 attracting signatures from over 150+ organizations. Now is the time to take tangible next steps: We call for: 1. 100% plant-based catering during COP29 and all UN climate conferences and offices, showcasing locally sourced, veganic produce where possible. 2. Negotiate a global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. Twenty four cities, including the Scottish Capital, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Los Angeles have called on world leaders to negotiate a Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. A focus on the multitude of benefits and opportunities of a transition towards a plant-based food system to address the triple threat of the climate crisis, food insecurity, and the cost of living crisis. 3. COP29 to take a zero-tolerance approach to greenwashing by the animal agriculture lobby by ensuring industry representatives are not platformed for the purposes of promoting unproven measures that are at odds with the latest IPCC science. It is imperative for climate conferences to provide climate-friendly catering. So please help nourish the planet and nourish ourselves by supporting plant-based catering at COP29! Impact 70,000 participants eating two vegan meals daily at COP29 would equate to 1.8 million climate-friendly plant-based meals. For example, if beef was swapped to plant-based protein and all dairy and cheese to plant-based alternatives, this would spare almost 40,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e), 64 square kilometres of land, and 728 million litres of water. That’s equivalent to sparing the emissions from driving over 154 million miles (taking 8,600 cars off the road for a year), more than the land area of Manhattan, and the water use of 291 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Take Action Help the petition reach its goal: 1. Share this petition with your friends, family and coworkers. 2. Post about this petition on your social media accounts, online forums, and groups. 3. Ask your partners and community groups to sign and share the petition. 4. Include a link to our petition on your website, blogs, newsletters, and social media bios. 5. Write to your elected officials and ask them to sign and share the petition. 6. Tweet the UNFCCC and COP29 and ask them to make climate conferences vegan. Background What is the Plant Based Treaty? A global Plant Based Treaty presents 3Rs and 39 detailed proposals to shift the world towards a plant-based food system in order to halt the widespread degradation of Earth's support systems caused by animal agriculture. Plant Based Treaty launched their Safe and Just Report at COP28 which offers a framework to address food’s impact on climate and other planetary boundaries and includes bold policy responses for a plant-based transition. Goals: 1. A global Plant Based Treaty as a companion to the Paris Agreement. 2. Local implementation of best practices from around the world. New York City is exemplary in its schools, with two plant-powered days per week and plant-based meals by default in hospitals (60% uptake); Edinburgh is also showing bold political leadership by endorsing the treaty and taking positive steps to implement proposals that fall within its jurisdiction. www.drove.comDairy Destroys Families: Pledge to Go Dairy-Free Today! There's no doubt about it; the dairy industry is one of the most destructive industries on the planet. From stealing terrified newborn babies away from mother cows, contributing massive amounts of greenhouse gases, and causing life-threatening diseases in humans, dairy production wreaks havoc on animals, the planet, and our families. Take the dairy-free pledge to do your part to stop dairy-caused destruction! ANIMALS There are roughly 270 million dairy cows on earth. Like all mammals, female cows only produce milk when they are pregnant. Many are confined to tiny stalls on dairy farms, exposed to extreme temperatures, and repeatedly impregnated against their will. Their babies are taken from them immediately or soon after giving birth. This is the true cost of dairy. To "save" cow's milk to sell for human consumption, dairy farmers must remove calves from their natural families. Mother cows experience severe depression and grieve the loss of their babies for months. The United States Department of Agriculture indicates that terrified male calves born on dairy farms are separated from their mothers within three days of birth. They are sentenced to short, miserable lives in tiny crates so small they can only stand or lay down. Farmers restrict their movement so their young muscles can't develop or toughen up, so they can kill them and sell their bodies for veal. In other intensive dairy farming countries such as Aotearoa, New Zealand, an average of 1.9 million four-day-old calves, known as "bobby calves," are slaughtered each year. Most of these babies are born male and considered waste products of the industry. These calves are deliberately bred into existence only to be killed so their mothers will produce milk for another species. While local governing bodies claim this is to feed their nation, approximately 95% of milk produced in Aotearoa is exported to foreign markets. Female calves are sentenced to the same bleak fate as their mothers, forced to suffer through the brutal process of artificial insemination to produce babies and milk until it is their turn to be slaughtered. Farmers may also shoot calves if they decide they won't profit from exploiting them. Dairy cows are forcibly impregnated and subjected to a torturous cycle of immense loss, fear, and pain over and over again. Cows have a natural lifespan of 15-20 years; however, once a cow's milk production drops below the expected yield, they are no longer of value to dairy farmers. For many, this means that at around five years of age, they become one of the billions of animals capable of experiencing pain, joy, and love whose lives are cut drastically short at slaughter. But a longer life is not necessarily a happier life for a dairy cow. Those who are spared remain trapped in the industry, caught in the barbaric cycle of insemination, birth, and the inevitable abduction of up to ten babies over the course of their lifetime. ENVIRONMENT The unthinkable cruelty to animals is bad enough, but the milk-fueled destruction doesn't stop there. The production of these products also wreaks havoc on the environment and threatens the planet's survival. Like all animals, dairy cows need food and water to survive. A lactating dairy cow in the United States drinks 30-50 gallons of water per day, more than any other land-based mammal. A staggering 144 gallons of water is used to produce 1 gallon of milk, and more than 93% of that water is used to grow feed for dairy cattle. A dairy cow in the US eats 100 pounds of feed a day. Growing feed for dairy cows accounts for about 34.1 million acres of cropland in the US alone, which harms and displaces countless animal species. Due to cows' digestive processes, the animals release large amounts of methane into the air through belching. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 80x more powerful than carbon dioxide at capturing and keeping heat within the planet's atmosphere over a 20-year timeframe. Cow manure also emits methane and contaminates soil and waterways. The United Nations Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition determined that cutting farming-related methane emissions is a crucial step in combatting climate change. A mature dairy cow weighing 1,400 pounds can generate roughly 120 pounds (54.4 kilograms) of feces and urine every day. When the urine and feces from cows combine, the mixture releases ammonia into the air. Ammonia can react with gases in the atmosphere to form ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. Studies show that these substances cause respiratory issues such as chronic bronchitis and asthma attacks. HEALTH The destruction of the dairy industry doesn't stop with killing vulnerable animals and destroying the environment. Consuming dairy products also leads to chronic illnesses, life-altering conditions, and fatal diseases within our own families. Milk from cows provides all of the calories and nutrients a calf needs to gain hundreds of pounds in just a few months. It also contains the mother's hormones and any growth hormones, antibiotics, and steroids that were given to her. Cows' milk is not intended for humans, which is why it is highly problematic for human health. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine indicates that milk and other dairy products are the top sources of saturated fat in the American diet, contributing to heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. The organization also asserts that dairy consumption is linked to an increased risk of ovarian, breast, and prostate cancers. The destruction caused by the dairy industry is undeniable. YOU have the power to make compassionate choices for yourself, the animals, and the planet. Please take a stand against the atrocities of the dairy industry by pledging to go dairy-free today! *After you sign the pledge, you will receive an email with informative resources to jump-start your dairy-free lifestyle! If the world adopted a plant-based diet we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectares
If everyone shifted to a plant-based diet we would reduce global land use for agriculture by 75%. This large reduction of agricultural land use would be possible thanks to a reduction in land used for grazing and a smaller need for land to grow crops.

www.drove.comSTOP Octopus FarmingWe, the undersigned, pledge to boycott and not visit The Canary Islands until the octopus farm proposal is dropped and octopuses are recognised as sentient beings in Gran Canaria. The Spanish company Nueva Pescanova has invested €65 million to build the world's first commercial octopus farm in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. As the first demand of the Plant Based Treaty states, we should not be building new slaughterhouses or animal farms but relinquishing animal agriculture facilities and not making the problem worse. Yet this octopus farm would lead to a million octopuses being killed for food each year (3,000 tonnes, according to the company). Nueva Pescanova admits they intend to farm the usually solitary creatures in cramped conditions, housing multiple octopuses – an estimated 10 to 15 – for each cubic metre of tank space. Placing territorial animals in unnatural environments commonly leads to stress and extreme behaviours, such as cannibalism, injury and death. Compassion In World Farming, who have examined the octopus farm proposals, estimate that 10-15% of octopuses housed under the plans will die before they even get to ‘slaughter age’. The shocking method of killing these sentient beings has now been revealed. The intensive farm plans to immerse the octopuses in near freezing -3°C (26.6°F) water – essentially, an ice slurry designed to kill slowly. Prof. Peter Tse, a cognitive neuroscientist at Dartmouth University, points out that it would be “very cruel” and should not be allowed, with several studies demonstrating that this method of killing fish results in a slow, stressful death. Octopuses are Individuals Octopuses are incredible creatures and should be treated with love and kindness, not imprisoned and slaughtered. They should never be stuck inside tanks, raised on farms, eaten, or abused in any way. These eight-armed geniuses are playful, inquisitive, sensitive, determined and just like every other animal on this planet, worthy of our protection. They have three hearts and have a top speed of 27 mph. In addition to their large doughnut-shaped brain, each octopus arm has a mini-brain. They are the world's most intelligent invertebrate and they have as many neurons as a dog; they are as smart as a golden retriever. There is no legislation in Spain or the Canary Islands that protects octopus welfare, and even if the farm had high welfare standards, there is no humane way to imprison or kill anyone against their will. Octopuses feel pain Jennifer Mather, PhD, an expert in the behaviour of octopus and squid at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, says, “It's probable that the octopus's reaction to pain is similar to a vertebrate. They can anticipate a painful, difficult, stressful situation—they can remember it. There is absolutely no doubt that they feel pain.” Not only that, but octopuses learn to avoid sites where pain has been inflicted on them, and they display strong negative behavioural changes when they are faced with pain. Environmental Disaster As the film Seaspiracy showed, our oceans are in crisis. Octopus farms will further add to the world’s fishing crisis and will continue to drain our oceans of fish and many other species while destroying delicate marine ecosystems. There are concerns over the nutrient-rich water that the farm will be pumping directly into the ocean, and feeding such a large amount of hungry mouths will require huge quantities of "fishmeal" – made of ground-up fish dragged from the ocean by industrial trawlers. For every 3 kg of octopus killed, 9kg of fish must also be killed to feed them, making it a totally unsustainable practice. Octopus farming contravenes the EU Strategic Aquaculture Guidelines (SAG) because it will further deplete populations of fish communities living in the oceans. Demands: We call on the Governments of Spain and Gran Canaria to intervene: >STOP this octopus farm - octopus farming is immoral, unsustainable, unethical and ecologically unjustified. >BAN eating octopuses and instead recognize octopuses as sentient beings as already being done in the United Kingdom. Become an Octopus Defender: >Pledge to boycott and not visit The Canary Islands until the octopus farm proposal is dropped and octopuses are recognised as sentient beings in Gran Canaria. >Watch Seaspiracy, My Octopus Teacher and Blue Planet >Read the Animal Save Movement blog, 'Five Interesting Facts about Octopus and why we shouldn't eat them'. >Endorse the Plant Based Treaty >Donate to support our campaigns.
