Just use #footnotes. No one likes checking references at a later page. And no one, and I repeat no one, loves books with endnotes, dear academic publishers. In fact, endnotes are for losers. Rant over.

I'm still not out of the rabbit hole of searching for an #OpenSource #PersonalKnowledgeManagement software. 
I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!
But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!
here's the script i use to turn my footnotes and references in #Ghost from the shorthand i use while writing into the proper markup for publishing. may not work for you, since i use a very specific format, but could be a good starting point!

the web is a small place. went looking for implementation ideas to have better footnote (and preferably sidenote) support in my newsletter, found https://gwern.net/sidenote, realized my own project is listed there!

One of my all-time favorites is in #Poe's #Pym, where he writes, mischievously and subversively, "The terms morning and evening, which I have made use of to avoid confusion in my narrative, as far as possible, must not, of course, be taken in their ordinary sense."
Reading Chuck Zerby, *The Devil’s Details: A History of Footnotes* (2002) today. I wonder if Junot Díaz had it in mind when he crafted that first, footnoted page of *The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao*. That little gesture is like a masterful précis and extension of the themes that Zerby develops in his book. #AmReading #footnotes #JunotDíaz
