Podcast-Empfehlung: "Weird Animals"
@Jem_of_Oz otherwise #Kakapo is cure...
I foster a kakapo in NZ and it's his birthday today. Look at this beautiful boy!
I just got the sad news that our adopted #kakapo, Kumi, has been found dead. This means there are now 243 kakapo left in the wild. The people at Kakapo Recovery are doing important work, and I encourage everyone who can afford it to consider supporting them by adopting a kakapo.

(was seinem Aussterben nicht grad entgebgenkommt.)
Meine #wandklex Kakapos sind heute im Original im #klexadventskalender!

Genome Sequencing Shows Kākāpō Evolved Two Plumage Colors To Evade Predators

Yesterday, we adopted the kākāpō Nora.
There are only 244 kākāpō alive today. Via a symbolic adoption, we can support the work of the kākāpō recovery program and help this critically endangered species.
Which kākāpō would you like to adopt?

@dontpanicbot42 The sperm whale remindes me of another famous character Douglas wrote about: The one that seemed to have developed rudimentary parachuting abilities. Others would say it flies like a brick....
If you are looking for a holiday gift for a young person, might I suggest adopting a kākāpō? They will get fun updates and you will help this unique, enormous parrot survive!

The kākāpō is an endangered #parrot endemic to NZ. @LaraUrban42 @HernMoral & co's study of most living #kakapo shows that their green vs olive #feather color #polymorphism has a structural basis and may result from past predation #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4daSv1Z
AUTUMN SHOP UPDATE
I am so excited to share all these whimsical new goods with you! We have stickers and prints and (for the very first time) bookmarks! We have vampires and werewolves and birds and pirates and books and cryptids and lots of queer stuff! I really hope you'll like it, and I'm so grateful for your support x
#Aotearoa #NewZealand's kākāpō developed different feather colors to evade predatory birds, genome sequencing shows https://phys.org/news/2024-09-zealand-kkp-feather-evade-predatory.html
The genetic basis of the #kākāpō structural color polymorphism suggests balancing selection by an extinct apex predator: Lara Urban et al. https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3002755
"olive coloration first appeared around 1.93 million years ago, coinciding with the evolution of two predatory #birds: Haast's eagle and Eyles' harrier."
Moody skies across southern Fiordland today, en route to Anchor Island for #kakapo work. #conservation #fieldwork
Sad news from the #kakapo world: Ranger, a 5 year old male, has been found dead on Anchor Island. He appeared to have died in a tree fall during recent storms. A reminder that animals have accidents too. There are 246 kākāpō left. #conservation #parrots Pic: Jake Osborne
Want to work for the #kakapo and #takahe teams at the Department of Conservation? We're hiring an infrastructure ranger to support our work at some of the most beautiful and important #conservation sites in Aotearoa. #jobs
