Two #fatalities in 6 months at this #Suffolk #motocross circuit (although before that apparently none for 24 years).

Probably a combination of a male-dominated macho culture plus overcrowding on the track (I wonder if the owners are struggling with costs, and allowing more riders on the track than there should be for safety?)

Emergency responders have engaged in a remarkable 19,300 emergency responses, highlighting the severity and urgency of the ongoing crisis. With 105 active wildfires consuming nearly 40,300 acres of land, the impact on the region is profound. We are deeply saddened to report at least 13 preliminary fatalities, a number which awaits confirmation from the coroner’s office. Furthermore, the destruction of more than 12,300 structures affects not just homes but the very fabric of community life.

Evacuation orders are enforced due to immediate threats to life, and authorities strongly urge residents to evacuate without delay. This week, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( #NHTSA ) stunned safety advocates by proposing new vehicle rules that it says will help reduce pedestrian deaths in America.
The new rules appear aimed directly at the trend of increasingly massive SUVs and trucks, which
have been shown to be more deadly to pedestrians than smaller and midsize vehicles.

Never in its 50-plus years in existence has the regulator issued new rules for automakers requiring them to change their vehicle designs to better #prevent #pedestrian #fatalities.
If enacted, the new rules could change how vehicles are designed in the US — permanently.
“It’s good to see NHTSA acknowledge that a myopic focus on pedestrian detection — which is imperfect — is no substitute for actually regulating car bloat,” said David Zipper, a senior fellow at the MIT Mobility Initiative.
