#RightToRepair movement having its most productive year ever in U.S. states

Already in 2025, five states have passed six different Right to Repair bills

by Nathan Proctor, June 3, 2025

"More and more state legislators are coming around to Right to Repair advocates’ simple premise: People should be allowed to fix their stuff.

"The campaign for the Right to Repair has been steadily building support — and this year, we’ve accelerated that pace even further. Here are some of the big highlights so far this year.

Five states have passed a total of six bills

"On May 19, Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson signed two Right to Repair bills, one covering most consumer electronics and appliances, and another covering powered wheelchairs.

"Then, in the last week, the Oregon and Nevada state legislatures passed their own wheelchair Right to Repair bills, while Texas and Connecticut lawmakers passed measures about fixing consumer electronics. All four bills have been sent to their respective state governors.

"This surge of progress makes 2025 the most productive one ever for our work on Right to Repair — and the year is not even halfway over.

A record 35 states have had active Right to Repair legislation

"So far this year, 35 states, up from 30 last year, have considered Right to Repair legislation. Many of those bills are still active, including a wheelchair bill in New York which has advanced; a new bipartisan bill introduced in Pennsylvania that covers consumer and business electronics; and many others.

"Earlier this year, we hit a milestone when Wisconsin introduced its first Right to Repair bill: Over the last eight years, legislators have put forward Right to Repair legislation in every U.S. state.

"Whether you live in Texas or Maine, you have stuff to fix, and we have a campaign to help you get the tools, technology or information you need for those repairs.

"The Right to Repair movement’s progress from coast to coast has been an important reminder that while some things divide Americans, we also agree on a lot. Repair means we get to keep our trusty devices going for longer, saving us money and cutting waste. It empowers all of us, including local repair businesses.

"It’s common sense, and increasingly, it’s common ground."

#TuscaloosaPublicLibrary To Host #RepairCafe

The #Tuscaloosa Public Library will once again host its Repair Cafe on Saturday, July 12.

by Ryan Phillips, Posted Thu, Jun 26, 2025

"The event will be held from noon until 3 p.m., with the first installment earlier this year giving nearly 300 patrons the chance to learn how to repair electronics, small appliances, clothing, jewelry, furniture, #bicycles, and more.

"Volunteers will provide their time and repair skills to diagnose and fix broken household items, sharing their knowledge with patrons so they too can become repairers.

"Past Repair Cafes have served 255 people, with volunteers attempting 96 repairs so far, with 53 completed and 20 partly completed, marking a success rate of 76%.

"The library says 260 pounds of trash have been saved from the landfill, with volunteers fixing scooters, cuckoo clocks, and even a Coleman camp stove.

"The event will also feature a #TakeItApartTable where children can experiment by taking apart items like laptops and coffee makers."

Patch · Tuscaloosa Public Library To Host Repair Cafe Next MonthVon Ryan Phillips

I try to take care of and invisibly and visibly mend my clothing so it would last in use as long as possible. This practice took a whole new step as I tonight started experimenting with how I could mend some regular cotton socks.

I have a pile of old, more or less worn down socks that have been waiting for me to try to figure out how they could be fixed. This first experiment is reinforcing a spot which does not yet have a hole with some sewing thread.

This is very time consuming but also kinda satisfying. But already now I'm learning that it would definitely be worth it to do it when there is just a smaller area in need of reinforcement.

#RepairCafe starts #TechAmnesty to support #community

by Alexandra Bassingham, June 24, 2025

"A community project, which encourages people to bring in items to be fixed for free, has opened an amnesty point for unused #technology to be handed in and repurposed for others.

"The Repair Café, started by Biddy Hammond from Somerset, has helped hundreds of people since being set up in October 2023.

"It has two donation drop-ins a month, one in #BurnhamOnSea and the other in nearby #Highbridge. Items can also be donated at the information bureau on Burnham seafront.

"They now have almost 20 #volunteers, fixing items including #SoftToys, #upholstery, #electricals, and #clocks, which in turn, reduces items sent to #landfill sites.

"Ms Hammond said they are looking for an offer of a storage facility space so they can support the community even more

"Ms Hammond said it was after hearing a woman at a charity shop saying she could not afford to fix her iron, that she came up with the idea of opening a repair café.

" 'I thought it's such a simple thing to do to help people out and it's pointless buying a new whatever every five minutes, because items work for such a short while nowadays.'

"Repair Cafe volunteers also visit homes with a thermal imaging camera, to help people increase insulation with 'simple fixes in their homes like thicker curtains,' Ms Hammond added.

"She said after lockdown the repair cafe has built the community in quite a strong way, offering a service and a social space.

"Hugh Champion, one of the repair team, said: 'We have a good time, hopefully delight a few customers, and send them home with things they had written off that are back to working condition again.

" 'And people are so delighted when you help them fix something especially when it has high sentimental value,' he added."

I repaired a cracked Rubbermaid laundry basket!

I followed the instructions in the below link. For wood to reinforce the handles, I cut up an old hockey stick I had lying around. Lightweight and perfect diameter.

I had a lot of paracord, so I also wove it around the sides, to reinforce and prevent more slats from breaking.

I'm amazed at how sturdy it is now! It's so pleasing to lift.

#Maine program to give old tech a new life for those in need

By Tina Fischer, June 18, 2025

"As part of its mission to boost broadband access across the state, the Maine Connectivity Authority is launching a program to distribute used digital devices to veterans, students, older adults and low-income households.

" 'Getting people a device that meets their needs for work, school, health care or other personal benefits is one of the most direct ways to enable internet access,' said Jessica Perez, the agency’s digital equity manager.

"The Maine Tech Share program, developed in partnership with a #WatervilleME nonprofit called #GiveITGetIT, aims to source 25,000 tablets, laptops and phones over the next few years for the effort.

"Give IT. get IT is a licensed and permitted electronics recycler.

" 'Maine business leaders who value our mission are the reason we have been able to provide more than 20,000 personal computers from Kittery to Fort Kent since 2002,' said Chris Martin, co-founder of give IT. get IT.

" 'Our partners benefit by safely donating their electronics, and we destroy the data, file compliance reports, and recycle and reuse everything we can to redistribute the technology,' he said. 'The whole process is a win for our partners, the environment and our community.'

"Maine’s Digital Equity Plan, approved in 2024, identifies access to an affordable, effective device for those who need one as a critical strategy to closing the digital divide.

"Nearly a third of low-income individuals and families indicated that they did not have enough devices to meet their needs. Age and quality of devices was also a consistent issue for enabling reliable internet connection.

"Over the last three years, the Maine Connectivity Authority has facilitated high-speed connections for 86,000 homes and businesses across the state."

Zero-Waste #RefillStations want you to rethink what a trip to the store looks like

By Jessica Roy | Assistant Editor, Utility Journalism
Aug. 23, 2023

"In L.A., most of us have some experience purchasing things by weight. Nuts and dried fruit at Sprouts. Last-minute meals from the hot bar at Whole Foods. Weed at the weed store.

"At a growing number of places around #LosAngeles, there’s a new category of bulk products: personal care and home cleaning items such as hand soap, moisturizer, toothpaste tabs, shampoo, laundry pods and all-purpose cleaner.

"They’re called refill stations. Almost all of them are woman-owned small businesses. And they all want you to rethink what a trip to the store looks like.

"Here’s how it works: You bring your own containers from home. Glass or plastic are OK, as long as they’re clean. If you forget them, stores offer a few options for sale. Many also have a basket of donated jars from other customers that you can use.

"An employee will weigh your container and mark that number, known as the tare. Fill up with as much or as little of a product as you want, then bring it back to be weighed again and pay for what you bought. It’s a great way to sample new products and reduce the amount of plastic packaging you consume."
