👉 Throwback to ISC High Performance 2025
In June, a group from our OpenWebSearch.eu tech team attended the International Super Computing conference #ISC2025 in Hamburg to share about the recently launched Open Web Index #OWI and its significance re European Web Sovereignty.
#ISC2025 marked the 40th anniversary of the world’s leading forum for advancing the application of high-performance computing in academia, government, and the private sector.

@pteryx According to the #Wired article [1], companies that have signed long-term deals with Microsoft will maintain access for the time being: "the largest customers of the #Bing APIs will retain their access after August 11, while smaller developers that were less profitable for Microsoft to support are being cut off".

#DuckDuckGo is cited as one of the companies who will retain access. #Ecosia plans to switch to #OWI.

#Mojeek and #Brave have their own indexes.

5 Days, 5 Reasons for the #OWI
R5: "More variety in search options"

The OWI serves as a foundation for multiple search applications beyond the current standards, e.g.:
- Vertical search, which allows you to find information on specific topics
- Argument search, which reduces bias by searching for a variety of aspects

Of course, LLMs can also be applied.

The #OWI overall provides options for more self-determination in web search.

5 Days, 5 Reasons for the #OWI
R4: "Transparency & Trust"

Amidst deep fakes, unmonitored copyright infringements + non-disclosure of sources, more transparency helps avoid mistrust & bias. Open web data are a counter-concept to the current narrow insights into the preprocessing aspects of digital information retrieval. Our economies & societies rely on verifiable information. Transparent curation + provision of information should be given.

R3: Data Protection

How can open web data contribute to more data protection?
👉The more easily & transparently we can access information online, the more easily service providers can develop a variety of web-based services, leading to more options to choose from. This leads to less gatekeeping and less pressure to disclose personal data when using such services.

5 Days, 5 Reasons for the #OWI
R2: "Economic Potential for EU businesses"

👉 In 2024, OWS.EU third-party partner MRC and OWS.EU consortium partner @osf presented a comprehensive study on the macro-economic potential of an #OpenWebIndex for European businesses.
The study also considered various societal impacts incl. digital sovereignty, cultural diversity + environmental & security factors:

5 Days, 5 Reasons for the #OWI
R1: "Digital Sovereignty"

Considering fast developments in AI & data mining + countless political & economic dynamics, Europe must claim digital sovereignty.

Today's web landscape is dominated by non-European search engines & web services, leaving EU users with little agency over their data & search metrics.

#OWI is a federated European web index that already provides ≈ a petabyte of open web data.

The Open Web Index (OWI) 🇪🇺 is a European-based initiative designed to foster a competitive digital infrastructure that aligns with European values and promotes independence from US-centered search engines.

This project is a significant step towards ensuring digital sovereignty and stimulate innovation within the European digital landscape.

It aims to provide an open alternative to proprietary search indexes, thereby reducing the over-reliance on a few dominant vendors that currently control the search engine market. 🔍

By doing so, it seeks to democratize access to information and ensure that the digital ecosystem remains diverse, competitive, and aligned with European standards and regulations.

The initiative is structured around several key steps, as illustrated in the image below. By visiting the page and clicking on the image, you can read more about each step associated with each phase:
