"I don't wish harm on anyone"
1. You seem so ignorant of #PeterPomerantsev
2. You seem so #Stupid to not have read books from #NeilPostman year 1985
You seem to revel in ignorance, stupid, dumb non-knowledge, non-understanding and anti comprehension.
@RationalizedInsanity "At least I can rest assured I wouldn't mess up so hard that my #ai #chatbot starts calling itself #MechaHitler and acting like a #fascist Reddit incel."
No, you confuse fiction with no=fiction, you replied to age 55 RoundSparrow with bullshit fiction, you believe lies and falsehoods and wont't reply to authentic science of #CarlSagan and #JosephCampbell and #NeilPostman about your meme addiction. You are a Mastodon machine lover, anti human.

That is the cycle that #NeilPostman described as Hell in his 1985 book #AmusingOurselvesToDeath

TV, far from being "the great information machine," is "the great disinformation machine..." As a medium for conducting public business, language has receded in importance; it has been moved to the periphery of culture and has been replaced at the center by the entertaining visual image... When a culture becomes overloaded with pictures; when logic and rhetoric lose their binding authority; when historical truth becomes irrelevant; when the spoken or written word is distrusted or makes demands on our attention that we are incapable of giving; when our politics, history, education, religion, public information, and commerce are expressed largely in visual imagery rather than words, then a culture is in serious jeopardy.

I need to circle back and re-read his "Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology".
I read it when it came out in 1992, but frankly don't remember much from it.
Edit: Free #PDF on archive.org!
This is from the Wikipedia entry:
"Postman considers technopoly to be the most recent of three kinds of cultures distinguished by shifts in their attitude towards technology – tool-using cultures, technocracies, and technopolies. Each, he says, is produced by the emergence of new technologies that "compete with old ones…mostly for dominance of their worldviews".
Indeed...
"Information has become a form of garbage, not only incapable of answering the most fundamental human questions but barely useful in providing coherent direction to the solution of even mundane problems." - Neil Postman

If all the secrets of adulthood, including sex, illness and death, are opened to children; cynicism, apathy or arrogance replace curiosity for them, short-circuiting education and moral development.

This is an interesting essay that applies the insights and warnings from noted media theorist Neil Postman's 1985 book "Amusing Ourselves to Death" to our current media. It's dark but not completely dark; there's a bit of optimism at the end. And possibly some gratification for us on the Fediverse who have rejected algorithms.

Today in “Samuel Pepys’ Diary Reimagined”:
“Entertainment has corrupted [peoples’] brain functions.”
"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one."

"Amusing Ourselves To Death"
On my agenda today:
- set up my #RaspberryPi5 / install #Linux (Ubuntu MATE most likely)
- permanently delete my inactive 3 bird app accounts
- draft a new post for #TheFutureIsFederated about data sovereignty and my plans for the next 4 years
- finish reading #NeilPostman’s superb “Building a Bridge to the 18th century”
- chin up, be defiant and resist
ICYMI: this is the latest #blog I wrote on my personal site: “The rebellion will be federated” https://elenarossini.com/2024/11/the-rebellion-will-be-federated/
“We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares. But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World." - #NeilPostman, 1985

I wanted to learn more about Trump’s “Agenda47” and how it squares with Project 2025
I was not surprised at all to see that his policy section is ALL video, no text statements

Can we get an Internet follow up on Neil Postman’s "Amusing Ourselves to Death”?
Because it seems like the 1995-2010 period of the Internet (email, IMs, dialup, IRC, newsgroups) was a LOT different than the broadband video timeline (YouTube, TikTok)
