Björn Müller, researcher at #MPSGoettingen and #IMPRS at #UniGoettingen graduate, has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal for outstanding achievements in his dissertation. The @maxplanckgesellschaft presented all awards for 2024 at its annual meeting on June 25 in Magdeburg. In his doctoral thesis, Björn Müller developed the theoretical foundations for a new helioseismological method called iterative helioseismic holography.

Congratulations! Lisa Zeßner, recent graduate of the IMPRS for Solar System Science, has won the 2025 AEF/DPG-EP prize for the best talk at the DPG Spring Conference in Göttingen. In her talk she presented the results of her doctoral research on "Comprehensive simulations of solar prominences".

Did you see the reenactment of the Sunrise III flight with a cute little model at the kids' show? https://academiccloud.social/@imprs_solar/114723459947791480 Meanwhile, all our visitors of course also got to see the real Sunrise III observatory up close. Certainly one of the absolute highlights of this #ndwgoe! Did you manage to get a selfie in the mirror?
Have you ever looked at clouds or water and tried to understand the complex system of swirls and ribbons?
To take it a step further: Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and its moons still pose puzzles of this kind, which we hope to unravel with the instruments aboard the JUICE spacecraft on its journey there.
Here's a hands-on experiment that explains how the gas giant's cloud swirls are formed.
And then the Sunrise III flight, kids' version! Just look at how absolutely adorable this demonstration turned out to be 
A launch with a bunch of helium balloons (several of them just to be sure!), a short flight, and finally the landing sequence - initiated with professionally applied scissors tonight.
Curved spacetime! Angular momentum conservation! It's hands-on physics with cool space applications.
Spectroscopy! First, theory: this is what a star's spectrum looks like - a rainbow 
Then, application: how to separate an image into its the two colors that it is made up from using a prism or or grating. It needs to be dark to see this well, so we had a big blanket fort area dedicated to this experiment!

It's a perfect early evening for our solar-system-themed kid's activities: little painted stars glowing in the sunlight at the face painting station, swirling planets painted on busy little arms, and of course everything is in motion at the bouncy castle!
