The UZH offers a culturally diverse and inspiring working environment and promotes international collaboration in research. The Geographic Information Visualization and Analysis (GIVA) group at the University of Zurich, Faculty of Science, invites applications for a 4-year PhD position with the SNF-funded Project “GeoNavLearn: Towards geographic context-adaptive mobile geographic information displays (mGIDs) to support navigators' spatial learning” led by GIVA head Prof. Dr. Sara I. @grimalkina Next month’s #StateOfTheMapUS will have a healthy mix of the human and tech sides, both grassroots and institutional, that would be relevant to those in or adjacent to #GIScience. Many government agencies have seen recent reductions in spending, limiting participation in conferences like SotM US. Events like ours are critical for building relationships and sharing knowledge. Government partners are valued stakeholders in collaborations for #opendata.
OSM US wants to fill that gap, and we need your help! This fund will support scholarships for US-based current and recent government employees to attend #StateoftheMapUS2025.

Following that is @tadusko presenting his work on the rise and fall of Flickr and use of its data in #GIScience at the #LBS2025 conference.
Key takeaway is that #Flickr is highly biased data produced in the Global North by a select few highly active users, but widely used in research because it is the only major social media platform that still allows data collection using its API. The question remains whether the data should be used.
