Good article about the efforts of politicians (USA, UK, EU) to get age-verification for everyone on the internet and, of course, control of encryption and chat.
It's very typical of these times that politicians rather listen to companies and their sales pitch instead of experts and scientists. If the experts aren't already thrown out, because of "austerity" or other destructive and/or nefarious reasons.

O Verão trouxe um renovado interesse no tema #ChatControl, até porque há o risco de ser aprovado pelo Conselho já em Setembro.

Mas a prioridade deve ser contactar o governo português, não necessariamente os eurodeputados.

Fight Chat Control – Protect Digital Privacy in the EU: The EU (still) wants to scan your private messages and photos.

The "Chat Control" proposal would mandate scanning of all private digital communications, including encrypted messages and photos. This threatens fundamental privacy rights and digital security for all EU citizens.

There is no "good" intrusive mass-surveillance or control (for the latter, think OSes locked against the user).

The intention of filtering out harmful content is charming, but there will be no good #Chatcontrol.

The idea of filtering out dangerous criminals is commendable, but there will be no good complete-police-file-on-everyone-just-in-case (unless one thinks the #Stasi was a great idea).

And coveting tools of central control is a mindset that *already* implies a certain degree of untrustworthiness.

That will be worsened by the ready availability of the tools. (The answer to the question "Quis custodiet ..." is not a rubber-stamp by an overworked judge, but that's all they currently have on offer!)

There will be no good #Chatcontrol.

Because it is *intrinsically* a tool against many things that are desirable in a democractic society.

"We must oppose #ChatControl / #Palantir / facial surveillance: what if it falls into the wrong hands"

I've always found that argument rather bizarre, because any hands wielding these things automatically become the wrong hands.

But it seems to work better than abstractly trying to convince people that these tools are *intrinsically* bad, and it's not wrong either, just a bit redundant - so I'll keep using it.
