There is def a market for Mastodon and GtS, but most people just want to join an app that their friends are on.

I get that, we need to act mainstream if we want to go mainstream, but that doesn't mean dark patterns, data selling and ads.

It just means making it super simple to get people onboard, and then gradually educate them about the fediverse and account migration.

Kind of like Threads, but open source 😎

@dansup
I have a vision where basically a new user selects the Fediverse project and instance just by answering a few question about their preferences and then gets a complete set consisting of project, instance, user account and link to a phone app in one UI. After installing the app and logging in the account already follows their friends (if they named some and they were found).

Basically a super easy onboarding that you can tweak later if you want to move elsewhere with your stuff.

@dansup But I guess that would be really difficult to get right...

@vvv yeah it would be, but we may be able to do something like that if we update our Directory listing logic, our pixelfed.org server picker is quite powerful, and this could be the perfect evolution to make onboarding even better.

We should chat more about this.

@dansup
I think one requirement would be that all instances regardles of the project type communicate the following things to the directory:
* main post format (images, text, videos) and limitations
* current and maximum user count (to avoid overcrowding but also spread out users to underpopulated instances)
* preferred languages
* country where the instance is hosted
* topic/content categories (nonspecific or art, music, science ... i.e. for special interest instances)
* the instance rules

@dansup
Then a set of questions/options could be established that determines the best project and instance based on the answers/selections made.

Finally a kind of unified account creation API is needed that can be used to create a user directly (while hopefully preventing spam bots and attacks)
