CryptGoat<p>Looking for a dedicated GPU for <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/transcoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>transcoding</span></a> purposes turned out to be the worst rabbit hole.🙈 </p><p>So, I'm using a AMD Ryzen 4600G in my homelab featuring <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/ProxmoxVE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ProxmoxVE</span></a>. The hardware transcoding capabilities of AMD hardware is very much behind Nvidia and <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Intel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Intel</span></a>, even though it isn't half as bad as expected. Anyway, the best transcoding hardware (best quality at same size/profile) are Intel devices featuring <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/QuickSync" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QuickSync</span></a>. Setting up another dedicated transcoding device (featuing a low power Intel APU such as the <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/N100" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>N100</span></a>) device doesn't seem to make much sense for me. There are several Intel Arc GPUs on the market and they all have pretty much the same transcoding capabilities, so I'd like to get the Intel GPU featuring the lowest power draw, especially when idling. Gianni Rosato<p>My friend wrote a comprehensive guide to getting started with AV1 encoding a while ago called AV1 Encoding for Dummies. I've just written &amp; published the modernized AV1 for Dummies guide on the Codec Wiki - you can check it out here: <a href="https://wiki.x266.mov/blog/av1-for-dummies" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">wiki.x266.mov/blog/av1-for-dum</span><span class="invisible">mies</span></a></p><p>Enjoy, and happy video encoding!</p><p><a href="https://disobey.net/tags/av1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>av1</span></a> <a href="https://disobey.net/tags/video" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>video</span></a> <a href="https://disobey.net/tags/encoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>encoding</span></a> <a href="https://disobey.net/tags/transcoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>transcoding</span></a></p>
The Peter Pan of Nerdery™ 🇦🇺🏜️<p>Have switched over to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/transcoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>transcoding</span></a> to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AV1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AV1</span></a> versus <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HEVC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HEVC</span></a>. Impressed with the codec and results, even if there isn’t a render-farm-style app like <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ripbot264" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ripbot264</span></a> that will allow me to spread the encoding across multiple machines (<a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TDARR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TDARR</span></a> is a fucking nightmare and it requires SMB access from the clients to the server - sorry but that ain’t going to work for internet-remote machines and is a shit implementation concept overall).</p><p>Anyway, 16 cores soon to be put to some serious work.</p>
Gianni Rosato<p>Hey everyone - wanted to announce a nice Aviator update that happens to coincide with an SVT-AV1-PSY update that we pushed just yesterday.</p><p>Aviator 0.5.1 has a couple new features, but chief among them is a new Subjective Tuning toggle for enabling encoder changes that improve visual quality at the expense of metrics. This is powered by SVT-AV1-PSY's new Tune 3 authored by Clybius; it adds subjectively motivated optimization to the existing Tune 2's great performance for an incredible balance of retaining fine detail in videos while still preventing blocking.</p><p>Here's a comparison encoded with Aviator (both 10-second videos were 7.5MB, down from the lossless source's 732.8 MB): <a href="https://slow.pics/c/tdrO5dY4" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">slow.pics/c/tdrO5dY4</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>(the source is Netflix's `foodmarket` at 1080p)</p><p>If you prefer the smoother-looking, more appeal-oriented shot here, that is OK too - Subjective Tuning is toggleable!</p><p>Aviator 0.5.1 should be available on Flathub pretty soon. Enjoy!</p><p><a href="https://disobey.net/tags/av1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>av1</span></a> <a href="https://disobey.net/tags/transcoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>transcoding</span></a> <a href="https://disobey.net/tags/Flatpak" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Flatpak</span></a></p>
Gianni Rosato<p>**Aviator 0.5.0** is out today, featuring the SVT-AV1 fork I co-develop: SVT-AV1-PSY.
