Stacey Cornelius 🇨🇦
I should have waited a bit until the light was better to take these. The earlier versions were blasted by the late afternoon sun.

Landscaping at my place means everything gets used. The sod will either make new soil or be used for patches in the lawn.

There's two sizes of sifted gravel. The larger stuff is already on the driveway. The pea gravel will be top dressing for pathways and filler in between pavers.

I decided mixed materials for the pathways is fine when I embarked on the project last summer – and cheaper than buying more pavers, which I'd also have to haul into the compound through the gate. Moving those bad boys is not fun.

Now I need to find a home for the big square rock I dug up that's sitting at the corner of the studio deck. For scale, the pavers are 2x2 foot square.

The flat rocks for the path (3rd photo) appeared when I was digging perennial and veg beds over the years. I've built a few stone walls, too.

My neck and shoulders are currently rather annoyed with me.

#Gardening #Landscaping #DIY

Stacey Cornelius 🇨🇦
Spent the entire day burning off stress. I'll pay for this tomorrow, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Some of you will recall me putting in a new path with stones I dug up around the property. I'm shifting more into the compound so I can move some concrete pavers to the path leading to the studio.

Not sure where the sod will end up yet, and I have to figure out how to resurface the old pavers. There's a nice little pile of sifted pea stone ready for use, too.

I'm sore already tbh 😬 But no regrets.

#Gardening #Landscaping #StupidHomeownerTricks

It’s doesn’t get much light, so I’m thinking of turning it into a bed full of shade-tolerant plants OR laying a deck and making it a seating/ potting area of sorts. I’d also love a pond but prob not the best spot for it. Badgardener
Revisiting a garden I built for some friends today, to start on the long-overdue water feature (behind me). The rest of the garden is settling in nicely - although much of the credit goes to the sunshine, which makes everything look better.

This was done from scratch, and every surface, object and stone was put in by me, apart from the fence and the largest beeches along the back (which have been slowly and carefully halved in height). Brief was 'Japanese-y', and after my first minimalist design of three silver birches, a carpet of moss and a running stream was rejected, it became obvious that I was allowed to culturally appropriate like mad. Apologies to any Japanese scrollers.

No before photos, but essentially, there was a collapsed shed, an old trampoline and - well, that was it. Even the dog wouldn't go in there. As transformations go, this is a good one.

The shed was the first structure up, a few years ago now, and the green roof is holding up well. The planting happened last summer, so this is really the first growth season and all seems ok. Electrician coming tomorrow to wire up all the underground conduits, so looking forward to some night-time shots.

It is what it is. Hopefully, the pics are high enough res for some zooming in. Personally, I like the bridge: salvaging the mahoosive piece of slate was EPIC.

#Gardening
#BloomScrolling
#Landscaping
#Sheds
#DryStone
#JoinIn

Stella-Luna Observatory
Still waiting….
The patio floor of the observatory awaits its observatory.
Frustration continues as we await word that the observatory has been shipped. We’ll be firing off another query of the manufacturer tonight reminding them, yet again, that we’re still waiting. Not that our questions or complaints have helped move things along. We’ll likely soon go ahead with pulling wiring through the buried conduit — utility power could be helpful even without the building. We hope to install landscape plants next week in the curved area along the north (left) edge of the patio. Our plant of choice is “Creeping Juniper”. Will we need to make some sort of temporary telescope shelter while we await our observatory (telescope shelter) in order to make better use of what we have? Maybe.

#2025 #construction #delays #frustration #landscaping #observatory

Hippy Steve
So let's put this out there again...

Looking for a #recommendation for a brand and battery system for a suite of electric #landscaping tools.

Our non-profit is going to take advantage of Ventura County's gas powered tool trade in program.

Ideally we'd get a bunch of brush trimmers, a couple chainsaws, a brush hog-like mower, and a leaf vacuum/mulcher. Compatible batteries would make things much simpler. And allow for fewer chargers and more $ spent on batteries.

We do brush clearing multiple times a year, almost entirely with volunteer work crews. So the equipment needs to be powered for up to 12hrs a day to make use of the labor, and need enough batteries/quick charging that there's always some available to refuel.

Hippy Steve
Looking for electric brush cutter recommendations. #Landscaping

I think our non-profit is getting close to jumping on the Ventura County gas/electric landscape tool trade-in.

The easiest sell is for weed whackers. Any recommendation for a brand/model of a heavy duty battery powered brush cutter? We frequently need to go through scrub oak saplings and yerba sante. Would be great if there's a brush cutter that can handle that.

Ideally with some sort of backpack or waist support. And ideally with handlebars. Long lasting batteries a huge plus. All of our brush clearing happens with volunteers during work parties. So they'll be going 12+ hours straight with battery swapping. Will need enough batteries so someone can trade off and get the dead batteries charged before they next battery is done.

Badgardener
Picture from one year ago today.

Terrific clients, who have a garden sited in a small but steep-sided hanging valley. Every year, from around November till May, the ground was saturated, with standing water a lot of the time - so they wanted to talk about drainage solutions.

This was the most obvious - just cut a winding trench from top to bottom. Hey presto, a stream! The water flowing through it hasn't been ducted in - this was the amount of wet previously trying to make its way down the garden, which is now contained and visible. Within a couple of weeks, the whole garden was starting to dry out. We estimated the flow at 5-6,000 litres per HOUR at its peak.

Work *with* the water, not against it.

(The large pebbles weren't my choice: I worry that they're over-large and obtrusive, but it will be interesting to see how they settle into the landscape as plants grow in from the sides. It's always good to get periodic reminders that the job is for the clients, not oneself.)

#Gardening #Landscaping #Stream #JoinIn
