OliverLijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Poperinge, Flanders, is the prime witness of more than four years of violent warfare. OliverRewinding my lifeline back to July 2021, I (once again) visited Belgium and especially the region of Flanders where my interest in Flanders Fields was born years ago. Hill 60 was a low rise south-east of Ypres made from the soil removed in digging a cutting for the Ypres to Comines railway. It is told to had excellent views over both Ypres and Zillebeke, and was captured by the German army during the first Battle of Ypres in November 1914. OliverIn other countries (especially Belgium, France or the UK) the Great War is clearly more present than the Second World War. In German history, both wars are the proof for the downfall of mankind but - perceived - the cruelties of WW2 are dominating here in Germany due to our ashaming historical legacy and millions of inexpressible crimes against humanity. Apart from that, when walking through Hamburg-Rahlstedt, I found this memorial to the fallen heroes of World War I by coincidence, getting the proof that the utter sacrifice of brave men of all nations (and German soldiers) in the first World War hasn't been forgotten as well.
