Wordy Words on WordsAs a young adult, there was this strange time where I got a job in a different town. I moved into it alone and worked for about a week before I was able to drive back home and get my wife and our few belongings (starting a life together is a weird thing to think back on). In that week, though, I had nothing in the house. I bought a TV because we didn’t have one (wasn’t able to get TV service until the first paycheck came in, though) and slept on the cardboard box it came in. It was the summer in Georgia so daily thunderstorms would happen in the evening and I just sat there on the floor until it was time to sleep on the box. But I did have this book so I was fine (more or less). Besides the jive - which is cringe-inducing to an uncomfortable level - I love this book. I thought the pacing was really good and I loved the space between the doors. I’ve read critiques that express distaste for King’s “boring,” parts like the space between doors or most of The Shining, but I think there’s purpose to it. The journey was supposed to be long and arduous and you don’t get that point across if you skip the space between the doors for the sake of a fast, exciting read. And, honestly, the story is better for it. This book also introduced Eddie, who just might be my favorite King character of all time. It was interesting re-reading this. Wordy Words on WordsI wrote up a huge review of this book because it brings up a lot of interesting ideas and questions regarding the value of souls, the transactional base of Christianity, the subjugation of a congregation at the hands of a power-hungry priesthood, and whether we as humans have been sold a twisted and warped tale of a deity for the sake of power and control rather than the potential truth of an all-knowing, all-seeing, and (most importantly) an all-loving god. But it was really long and religion is such a hot-button topic that I think it’s safer for everyone’s sanity to instead recommend you read the book (it’s not insanely long, though there are definitely parts to stop and ponder at) and see what your feelings are. I WILL say that in the 1990s parents petitioned school and public libraries to either remove or not stock Goosebumps books because of violence, death, and satanic imagery - none of which were in the series. When asked why they thought parents were petitioning, a librarian said they thought it was because parents were just reading the titles of books rather than the actual books. Wordy Words on WordsI like baseball so this might be a bit biased. I do NOT like baseball so much that I thought King’s “Faithful” was an exciting read, but I do like baseball and a common critique I hear about this story is that it’s boring because it focuses on, well, baseball. But I love it. This is a novella written as an interview transcript. The interviewee, a character talking to King himself, is giving his memories on a player called Blockade Billy. It documents their season and ends about how you would expect a Stephen King story to end. This isn’t the first time King has done stories written as transcripts (Dolores Claiborne was a whole NOVEL written as one) but I could see how it would throw some people off. Look: I get why people might not like this story. It’s short, it’s not horror in King’s traditional sense, it’s a transcript, and it’s about baseball. But I think it’s great. It reminded me of those 1990s Disney sports movies, documenting the dramatic rise of the underdog to a big ending (though the endings are quite different) and I thought it was very exciting. It felt weird to get this nostalgic hit for DISNEY movies while reading KING but it happened. Also, if you’re struggling with the transcript angle of the story (same for Dolores), I recommend checking your favorite audiobook sources for it because the narrator is very good and gives the transcript a lot of life and drama. I think this is easily one of King’s hidden gems. People see the cover, shudder because they don’t like baseball, and dismiss it. CrapknockerFinished reading Stephen King's The Stand. Goddamn that was a good book. Over 1000 pages of slow burn, amazingly detailed story. If you're new to King, it's definitely not the first book I'd recommend, (that would be the Gunslinger) but it's well worth your time.
