Ben Waber<p>First was an incredible talk by Moira Dillon on interrogating human spatial and social cognition at the Kempner Institute at Harvard University. Using ingenious studies with infants, children, and adults across cultures Dillon masterfully characterizes how we think about space and social agents. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"A group lead by cognitive scientists and AI researchers hailing from universities in the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and the US, has published a searing position paper urging educators and administrations to reject corporate AI products. The paper is called, fittingly, “Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia,” and it makes an urgent and exhaustive case that universities should be doing a lot more to dispel tech industry hype and keep commercial AI tools out of the academy.</p><p>“It's the start of the academic year, so it's now or never,” Olivia Guest, an assistant professor of cognitive computational science at Radboud University, and the lead author of the paper, tells me. “We're already seeing students who are deskilled on some of the most basic academic skills, even in their final years.”</p><p>Indeed, preliminary research indicates that AI encourages cognitive offloading among students, and weakens retention and critical thinking skills.</p><p>The paper follows the publication in late June of an open letter to universities in the Netherlands, written by some of the same authors, and signed by over 1,100 academics, that took a “principled stand against the proliferation of so-called 'AI' technologies in universities.”"</p><p><a href="https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/cognitive-scientists-and-ai-researchers?utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bloodinthemachine.com/p/cognit</span><span class="invisible">ive-scientists-and-ai-researchers?utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/CriticalThinking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CriticalThinking</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/CognitiveScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CognitiveScience</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Universities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Universities</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/HigherEd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HigherEd</span></a></p>

Every time you say "time is running out" or describe someone as "looking up to" another person, you're not just using colourful language—you're revealing the secret architecture of human consciousness itself.</p><p>This isn't another feel-good piece about the beauty of language. This is about power. The power of invisible structures to shape not just how we communicate, but how we think, what we can imagine, and ultimately, what kinds of realities we're capable of creating.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/CognitiveScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CognitiveScience</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Metaphor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Metaphor</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Research" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Research</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Language</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/EmboddiedCognition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EmboddiedCognition</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/AcademicResearch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AcademicResearch</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/ConceptualThinking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ConceptualThinking</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/MindScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MindScience</span></a></p>

Philo Sophies<p>What if your consciousness 🧠 is just an illusion ✨? </p><p>In the latest episode of our Zoomposium, with the sadly recently deceased Professor Daniel Dennett, one of the world’s leading philosophers of mind, shares his groundbreaking views on consciousness, the self, and the potential of artificial intelligence. </p><p>For nearly six decades, Dennett has explored how our brains create the sense of “you,” challenging conventional ideas about identity and mental life. </p><p>He explains why the mind may be multiply realizable, meaning consciousness could exist in forms beyond humans—even in strong AI. Licho<p>I just learned that the modern science says that <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>insects</span></a> can experience pain and suffering.</p><p>This is actually great news. All the years of rescuing the spiders were worth it.</p><p>It's also great news because it turns out the insects don't mind mechanical damage, they do mind temperature. Now I know that the best way to kill <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mosquitoes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mosquitoes</span></a> is with fire. I want them to suffer.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neuroscience</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cognitivescience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cognitivescience</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/awareness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>awareness</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/animals" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>animals</span></a></p>
Joanna Bryson, blathering<p>I wrote three obituaries for Margaret Boden. The longest one is a blogpost that says much of what I wanted to say when I got the chance to write the one for Nature. It talks about US / engineering / Cambridge UK Logic AI vs Polymath / Science / Mostly European including Edinburgh AI. Anyway, links to all three of them are here. </p><p><a href="https://joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/2025/07/margaret-boden-and-gaza.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/202</span><span class="invisible">5/07/margaret-boden-and-gaza.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/genAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>genAI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Boden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Boden</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/margaretBoden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>margaretBoden</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AIEthics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AIEthics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/cognitiveScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cognitiveScience</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/philosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>philosophy</span></a></p>
