Luca Frigerio<p><strong>Il satellite SWOT rileva per la prima volta le ondate di piena fluviali</strong></p><p class="">Questa nuova capacità aiuterà nella gestione delle zone fluviali e nella rilevazione tempestiva di ondate di piena che potrebbero causare inondazioni.</p><p>I dati provenienti dal satellite <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_Water_and_Ocean_Topography" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">SWOT</a> (<em>Surface Water and Ocean Topography</em>) sono stati elaborati dai ricercatori della NASA e dell’Università Virginia Tech di Blacksburg, per misurare dall’orbita per la prima volta nella storia le altezze e le velocità delle ondate di piena potenzialmente pericolose generatesi in alcuni fiumi statunitensi.</p><p>Nella fattispecie, sono state tre le onde rilevate, probabilmente causate dalle pesanti piogge cadute sul territorio, alle quali in un caso si è aggiunta anche l’acqua proveniente dallo scioglimento di un iceberg.</p><p>Al momento non esistono ancora dei <em>database</em> che raccolgono dati satellitari relativi alle onde di piena dei fiumi. Tuttavia queste nuove ricerche sottolineano nuovamente il potenziale delle osservazioni satellitari come importante strumento in mano agli idrologi e agli ingegneri. Si tratta di informazioni utili specialmente per quelli impegnati nei territori fluviali, soprattutto in zone con un limitato controllo dei flussi d’acqua come chiuse e argini artificiali.</p><p>Diversamente dalle onde oceaniche, che generalmente sono causate dai venti e dalle maree, e che si riversano sulle rive ad un ritmo costante, le ondate fluviali, chiamate anche onde di piena o onde di flusso, sono delle ondate che hanno una durata temporanea ma che si estendono in lunghezza per decine o centinaia di chilometri. Esse possono essere causate dalle piogge intense o dallo scioglimento primaverile delle nevi; tuttavia sono essenziali per il trasporto a valle di nutrienti e organismi viventi. Purtroppo, come le notizie di cronaca ci ricordano spesso, le ondate di piena fluviale possono rappresentare un pericolo: le piene innescate da forti piogge o da eventi imprevisti come per esempio il crollo di una diga, possono provocare inondazioni.</p><p>Un articolo pubblicato lo scorso 14 maggio sulla rivista <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2024GL113875" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Geophysical Research Letters</a>, ha esposto per la prima volta questa tipologia di ricerche.</p> SWOT raccoglie i dati tramite ripetute spazzate larghe 120 km come mostra questa animazione che simula la raccolta di dati sopra la Florida. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech <p><strong>Velocità e dimensioni</strong></p><p><a href="https://www.astronautinews.it/2022/12/la-nasa-lancia-il-satellite-swot-per-la-ricognizione-delle-acque/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Lanciato il 16 dicembre 2022</a>, il satellite SWOT è una collaborazione fra l’<a href="https://swot.jpl.nasa.gov/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">ente spaziale statunitense</a> e l’Agenzia spaziale francese <a href="https://cnes.fr/en/projects/swot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">CNES</a> (<em>Centre National d’Études Spatiales</em>) ed è impegnato nel monitoraggio delle altezze di quasi tutte le acque del nostro pianeta, siano esse di acqua dolce o salata, utilizzando il proprio radar interferometro in banda Ka (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/latest-international-water-satellite-packs-an-engineering-punch/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">KaRIn</a>). Questo strumento è in grado di mappare l’altezza e la larghezza dei corpi idrici, facendo rimbalzare le microonde dalla loro superficie e cronometrando il tempo di riflessione del segnale. Oltre a monitorare gli accumuli delle acque nei laghi e nei fiumi, i dati del satellite servono anche per osservare meglio le dinamiche e gli impatti dei movimenti idrici e dei loro cambiamenti.</p><p>SWOT ha aiutato gli scienziati a monitorare l’<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/see-swot-missions-unprecedented-view-of-global-sea-levels/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">innalzamento dei livelli delle acque marine</a> in prossimità delle coste, a <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/international-swot-satellite-spots-planet-rumbling-greenland-tsunami/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">rilevare gli tsunami</a> e a <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/next-generation-water-satellite-maps-seafloor-from-space/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">mappare i fondali marini</a>; ma questa è tutto sommato la missione principale del satellite. Ciononostante, la scienziata Hana Thurman di Virginia Tech, coautrice della pubblicazione di cui sopra, ha scoperto che la missione aveva registrato tre chiari esempi di ondate di piena fluviale, compresa quella dell’aprile 2023 che interessò in maniera drammatica il Yellowstone River nel Montana. In quell’occasione SWOT riuscì a rilevare un fronte d’acqua alto 2,8 metri che fluiva verso il Missouri River nel Nord Dakota; si trattava di un enorme quanto spettacolare picco lungo 11 km seguito da una coda più lunga. Questi dettagli sono stati resi osservabili grazie all’elevata risoluzione dello strumento KaRIn.</p><p>Ma c’è dell’altro; esaminando le immagini ottiche della zona acquisite dal satellite europeo <a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-2" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sentinel-2</a>, la dottoressa Thurman ha potuto stabilire che l’ondata era probabilmente stata prodotta dal distacco e dalla conseguente liquefazione di un iceberg proveniente da una regione a monte.</p><p>Le altre due ondate di piena rilevate da Thurman e dal suo team sono state innescate da un’abbondanza di precipitazioni. Una, individuata da SWOT il 25 gennaio 2024 sul Colorado River a sud di Austin, Texas, è stata associata alla più grande inondazione dell’anno in quella zona; era alta 9 metri, lunga 267 km e ha viaggiato ad una velocità di 1,07 m/s per oltre 400 km prima di riversarsi nella Matagorda Bay. L’altra ondata si è originata nel fiume Ocmulgee River vicino alla città di Macon in Georgia, nel marzo del 2024. Alta 6 metri e con un’estensione di oltre 165 km, ha viaggiato ad una velocità di 0,33 m/s per oltre 200 km.</p> Questa illustrazione artistica mostra il satellite SWOT con i pannelli fotovoltaici completamente dispiegati. Credits: CNES <p><strong>Osservazioni complementari</strong></p><p>Gli ingegneri e i gestori delle risorse idriche misurano da tempo le ondate di piena fluviale tramite gli idrometri, i quali registrano l’altezza dell’acqua e stimano la portata in determinati punti fissi lungo un fiume. Negli Stati Uniti le reti idrometriche sono gestite da agenzie governative come l’U.S. Geological Survey, ma nel resto del mondo sono meno diffuse.</p><p>Come dimostrato dal lavoro degli scienziati della NASA e della Virginia Tech, i dati satellitari sono complementari a quelli ottenuti dal sistema idrometrico. In sostanza, è possibile paragonare gli idrometri ai caselli autostradali che cronometrano il passaggio dei veicoli, mentre SWOT è come un elicottero in volo sopra l’autostrada e che scatta fotografie del traffico.</p><p>Le velocità delle ondate di piena che SWOT ha permesso di determinare sono simili a quelle calcolate tramite i dati raccolti dagli idrometri: ciò significa che il satellite potrebbe essere di aiuto per monitorare le ondate di piena nei bacini fluviali senza la necessaria installazione di sistemi idrometrici. La conoscenza di dove e perché si sviluppano le ondate di piena fluviale può aiutare gli scienziati a monitorare i <a href="https://gracefo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/220/warming-makes-droughts-extreme-wet-events-more-frequent-intense/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">mutamenti nei modelli di inondazione</a> in tutto il mondo.</p><p><strong>Il satellite SWOT</strong></p><p>SWOT è stato sviluppato congiuntamente dalla NASA e dal CNES con i contributi dell’Agenzia spaziale canadese CSA (Canadian Space Agency) e di quella del Regno Unito UKSA (United Kingdom Space Agency).
