Local elections in New Mexico - early voting has been running for 3 weeks.
This analysis of early voting looks at the turnout rate of Dem voters, compared to the total number of registered Dem voters in each precinct in Alamogordo.
There is some surprising info here, some of it encouraging, some of it concerning.
The map is shaded to represent Dem turnout. Lighter = lower turnout percentage, darker = higher turnout percentage.
What surprises me is that the precincts with the highest Dem turnout rate are five times larger than for the lowest rate. That's a huge spread of motivation/action. (I was expecting a spread of two to one or a little bit more.)
After three weeks of early voting, with one week early voting remaining, and election day remaining...some precincts already have Dem turnout of over 40%?! Some neighborhoods are fired up! They live in the redder (newer, wealthier) precincts in the outskirts of Alamogordo.
Somehow, we gotta tap into their enthusiasm and redirect a bunch of it to the older, less wealthy parts of Alamogordo.
Example: Mesa Verde (precinct 15) is a red precinct, but already 1/3 of those Democratic voters have cast ballots. That's pretty good.
Contrast that with Chihuahuita and Walker. Their turnout is struggling to achieve 1/10th of their total number of registered Dem's.
How is early voter turnout in your city? Are you helping any local candidates?
We need to boost civic engagement...for the rest of our lives, and involve lots more younger folks.
