Bèr Kessels 🐝 🚐 🏄 🌱<p>I've moved several of my hosting to <a href="https://mastodon.nl/tags/scaleway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>scaleway</span></a> now. <br>Consolidated from <a href="https://mastodon.nl/tags/AWS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AWS</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodon.nl/tags/Linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linode</span></a> and <a href="https://mastodon.nl/tags/Digitalocean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Digitalocean</span></a>. I've been a happy customer of <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mirrored.social/@linode" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>linode</span></a></span> for twenty years, but wanted everything in one place and in a <a href="https://mastodon.nl/tags/EU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EU</span></a> company.</p><p>Scaleway has a good feature set. Overall well polished and nicely integrated. On par with DigitalOcean, certainly not as broad as AWS but slightly more feature complete than linode.</p><p>However, some ugly snags. I'd say that's more of a communication or marketing issue:</p>
Kamalavelan<p>Some how I am very envious of the 60MB RAM footprint while booting into a <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/vps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vps</span></a>. The best I could get onto my <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> is 300MB usage on a <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a> cloud image. This is unfortunately the same as my desktop <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> with <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> running. </p><p>The Ubuntu server image idled at 600MB RAM usage with <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>docker</span></a> &amp; <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/sshd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sshd</span></a>. The culprits using most ram are <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/snapd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>snapd</span></a> &amp; <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/multipathd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>multipathd</span></a>.</p>
Boško Ivanišević<p>Finally moved my VPS from <a href="https://ruby.social/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a> to <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.hetzner.social/@hetzner" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>hetzner</span></a></span>. I guess the answer will somehow involve flashing a router with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/openwrt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>openwrt</span></a>.</p>
EmpathicQubit<p>I was able to make some minor quality of life improvements to my <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/Terraform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Terraform</span></a> scripts since everything isn't a cobbled-together mess in Google Cloud (Trying to use Firebase as a static site is unnecessarily painful) and <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/ProtonMail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ProtonMail</span></a>.</p><p>Normally, emails have to be signed by the sending server to prevent spoofing. If you don't do this, your server will likely be filtered into spam by default. The public key is placed in a special <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/DNS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DNS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/DKIM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DKIM</span></a> record, and mail servers check to make sure this matches the emails you send before they deliver your <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/email" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>email</span></a> or assign it a spam score. Because I was using ProtonMail, it wasn't easy to script this record, so I was manually writing it in the Terraform file. Now I can simply fetch it from the Linode server via SFTP. One caveat of doing this is that I don't feel comfortable using <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/Github" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Github</span></a> Actions for deployment anymore, since the server contains my communications data and not just public websites. I deleted the actions script and corresponding keys and will only run deployments from my machine now.</p><p>I still have all the DNS records in Google Cloud, but I will probably be moving them to <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/Linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linode</span></a> in the near future. <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/gcp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gcp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/selfhosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosting</span></a></p>
EmpathicQubit<p>Working through moving my old stuff to <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/Linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linode</span></a>, and hit an interesting problem. You can't put a CNAME in an "apex" domain (apex.com, as opposed to subdomain.apex.com) because it apparently will mask other important mandatory <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/DNS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DNS</span></a> records such as the NS. Linode's static website buckets are driven off CNAMEs pointing to linodeobjects.com, so I decided to move my website to www and create a redirect to it on the webserver. Also, there is no mechanism to redirect http to https in Linode, so I had to add a <code>&lt;meta http-equiv&gt;</code> into the site header to do this. In <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/Hugo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hugo</span></a> I overrode the layouts/_internal/google_analytics.html template. Not sure if there's a better way to do it, but I didn't see one with the Binario theme I was using. <a href="https://mastodon.de/tags/selfhosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosting</span></a></p>
Chris L<p>I use Linode for a long time but I am looking to move to EU hosting, to get away from US not for latency. Any recommendations? I have two VMs and a persistent storage thing; I backup home files and host my email and dns and tiny website mostly for my own recipes and resume and do the odd dev or network testing so not very demanding. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/selfhosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosted</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/linode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linode</span></a></p>

Pricing is similar between <a href="https://social.chiefgyk3d.com/tags/DigitalOcean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalOcean</span></a>, but also I already have the T-Shirts from past Linux conferences.
