OK, OK, noone here reads #Galician. But all my friends and colleagues in #California interested in #urbanism and #transit should check out this #article nonetheless. #Pontevedra may not be #carfree but it is close. Without national or provincial support the city has managed to reorient itself around #walking. Conservatives still complain about the lack of #parking, but they had the same problem back when the #city was full of #cars.

The article is about #Spain and written in #Spanish. Sorry.

Member states of the EU have poured cold water over an ambitious request made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Sánchez has asked that three of the country's regional languages – Catalan, Galician and Basque – be named as official EU languages. But during a ministerial meeting in Brussels, the appeal fell far short of the required unanimous support and it's unclear when the issue could be put back for discussion.

Spain has asked the European Union to recognize Basque, Catalan, and Galician as official EU languages.

For those of us who translate to or from any of Spain's co-official minority languages, if this proposal is ever approved, it would mean that the EU's excellent multilingual terminology database IATE would start to include terms in those languages.

In Spain’s parliament, you can now speak Basque, Catalan or Galician as minority languages are part of the left’s effort to stay in power.

Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, from 1939 to 1975, forbade official use of any language but Castilian Spanish.

Spain has asked the EU to add the Basque, Galician and Catalan languages to its list of 24 official languages as part of Pedro Sánchez’s efforts to woo smaller regional parties, whose support he needs to secure a fresh mandate as prime minister.

Brussels would need to translate hundreds of thousands of pages of EU law into these languages, adding to the strains on its stretched translation service.
