Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.34</p><p>War. Me &amp; Baby Brother</p><p>I was spoilt for choice in choosing a funky vibe from War, but decided I'd go for this slice of muscular funk. Great relentless rhythm playing, counterpointed with some great organ work (replacing the normal funk horns) and backing chanted vocals to produce a dynamic bit of funkiness.</p><p>You might also check out Low Rider or Galaxy for different versions of War's funk, both great in different ways.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.33</p><p>Aaron Neville. Hercules</p><p>This great piece of political funk from the Neville Brothers (backing brother Aaron) is a wonderful swirling bit of mesmeric music making. The relaxed shuffle rhythm driven by a lovely piano line, backs a set of thoughtful political lyrics, again demonstrating how the funk can be a vehicle for protest music. A piece of sublime genius - enjoy!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.32</p><p>Brick. Good High</p><p>from its slight echo of the theme to Bullitt in the intro, this infectious bit of funk from Brick has a great springy rhythm laced with a fabulous horn arrangements. The chanted vocals, some strings &amp; a bit of start-stop funkiness get the whole package moving to a great danceable groove.</p><p>(And if you like this check out their earlier Dusic, another bouncy funky classic)</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.31</p><p>Earth Wind &amp; Fire. Saturday Night</p><p>This bit of funk from EWF edges towards their later disco output but retains a great funk sensibility. A great rhythm allied to some fabulous horn section work &amp; EWF's usual vocal arrangements, make for a (perhaps) poppier feel, but it's still got that funkiness that gets it included here. Just joyful &amp; a real floor filler!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.30</p><p>Parliament. Mothership Connection (Star Child)</p><p>As promised another slice of PFunk &amp; this classic track from Parliament is a great example of the complex, multilayered funk of the PFunksters. A burbling, funky rhythm has a chanted vocals, alongside spoken commentary, a great slice of horn section &amp; that all important spaceyness we'd expect from George Clinton &amp; the gang... yup, the Mothership Connection is here.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>[apologies for the delay....]</p><p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.29</p><p>Chocolate Milk. Girl Callin'</p><p>This is a great bit of relentless funkiness from the lesser known Chocolate Milk (although you may know their Action Speak Louder than Words). With chanted vocals, a funky rhythm section &amp; (once again) great horns stabs, this little mid-tempo gem always get me grooving. </p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a> </p><p>[If you've just found the <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funky50</span></a>, you can search the # to see the previous selections]</p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.28</p><p>Millie Jackson. I Cry</p><p>Just to prove you can be just as funky at a low tempo, Millie Jackson's brilliant I Cry delivers a great groove with all the normal funk elements (from wha wha guitar, to a solid rhythm section) but at a relaxed tempo. And I just love those swirling strings, and of course Jackson raspy vocals are so distinctive. A great slice of funk for Friday!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.27</p><p>Sons of Slum. What Goes Around (Must Come Around)</p><p>This slab of Stax funk is driven by a stuttering rhythm section with great horn stabs (of course), and some funky electric piano playing. Its a classic bit of start/stop funkiness, driving forward some political lyrics, to produce a groove that is irresistible. As so often, some of the best soul/funk has a political sensibility, too often ignored!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.26</p><p>Isaac Hayes. Joy</p><p>If you only know Isaac Hayes from his celebrated soundtrack to Shaft, prepare for 16 minutes of mesmeric funkiness. Joy is one of his long-form soul masterpieces, and has a wonderful late night funky grooviness. Alternating between sparseness &amp; lush sections I just love the symphonic ambition of the track, its great rhythmic syncopation &amp; the use of the strings &amp; horns for punctuation. Brilliant!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.25</p><p>Undisputed Truth. Ungena Za Ulimwnegu (Unite the World) Friendship Train</p><p>This extended bit of funky genius from the Undisputed Truth &amp; produced by Norma Whitfield builds &amp; builds into a funk masterclass. Its driven by a great rhythm section but is also brilliantly sparse in its overall sound, including some great vocals. Its classic Whitfield (who will be featured again later in the Funky50). Lean back &amp; enjoy.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.24</p><p>Ben E King. Supernatural Thing </p><p>This great later Ben E King track is a great bit of funkiness. Having worked wit the Average White Band, his sense of the groove was clearly influenced by the Scottish funksters (their sound is recreated here by US session musicians). Its a burbling guitar led groovy shuffle that drives forward with a hypnotic rhythm, backing Kings great vocals. Great stuff.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.23</p><p>James Brown. Stone to the Bone</p><p>As we approach half way in the Funky 50 its time for the second track from the Godfather of Soul. This is a classic long form funky groove from one Brown's 70's double LPs (leaving lots of room for long grooves). This is a lovely bit of funk, with as you'd expect, a great horn section backed by a classic JBs rhythm &amp; guitar riffing. Just relax into it &amp; let it take over for 10 mins!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.22</p><p>Brides of Funkenstein. Amorous</p><p>Well, we were always going to have to have some PFunk in the Funky50 so lets get down to the Brides funky masterpiece Amorous. The rhythm is classic PFunk with some great horn lines to emphasise the funkiness. The Brides ensemble vocal offer a sign-song element to a groove that is infectious. More PFunk later in the 50.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.21</p><p>The Equals. Funky Like a Train</p><p>This slice of funkiness by the Equals does exactly what it say it does; it is indeed funky like a train. The burbling rhythm track is complemented by a classic funky keyboard riff which drives forward a mesmeric groove, backing some great vocals, with almost Kraftwork like hints at passing stations. Relentlessly funky!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.20</p><p>Leon Haywood. That's What Time It Is</p><p>This great bouncing Leon Haywood track was originally a b-side but is a wonderfully bubbling bit of funkiness. Great horns &amp; political lyrics alongside a stuttering rhythm make this a nice slice of danceable funk. Yup, that's what time it is!</p><p>(and if you like this, Haywood's more up-tempo Don't Push it Don't Force it is a great slice of semi-disco funkiness, too)</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.19</p><p>David Bowie. Fame</p><p>David Bowie took on many guises; here he (explicitly) does the James Brown, with a great slice of blue eyed funk. Written with with John Lennon it offers a slightly rockier version of Brown's sound, but is none the worse for that. JB then picked up the central hypnotic riff for his own Hot (I want to be loved) the next year. Bowie's soul years also produced the magnificent Golden Years, of course.</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.18</p><p>LTD. Groove for a Little While</p><p>This nice bit of funky, horn punctuated stuttering funkiness comes from a band more known for dance/disco tracks than funkiness, but on this they are channeling funk brilliantly. Complete with a great funky sax solo, chanted vocals &amp; that funky keyboard sound, its a pity they only found the funk occasionally. Still, when they found that groove they worked it well!</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.17</p><p>Cymande. Brothers on the Slide</p><p>Cymande are well known in funk-fan circles with various tracks being often nominated a 'rare groove' classics. Brothers on the Slide is a personal favourite, with its mellow funkiness driven by a percussive shuffle rhythm section, some great horn punctuation &amp; some great start/stop sections. Groovy funk!</p><p>(if you like this check out their slightly better known track, The Message).</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.16</p><p>Rose Royce. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is</p><p>From the soundtrack to Car Wash, this great slice of chant led, horn driven dance music is a brilliant bit of funkiness. Using a classic start/stop form, it is a vehicle for some great lyrics, featuring some fab bass playing &amp; overall is just a joy.</p><p>(Of course, you can also check out the disco-funk theme song, also by Rolls Royce that's been a dancefloor fave for years!)</p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funk</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
Emeritus Prof Christopher May<p>50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.15</p><p>Latimore. Qualified Man</p><p>This little gem from Latimore is driven by a fabulous rhythmic pulse, and some great funky keyboard work. Once again this is a crossover form Soutrhern soul, which is what Latimore usually recorded. What makes this so good is the wonderfully sparse production on the linking sections where the rhythm just does it s work. Always get's people swaying on funk nights! </p><p><a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Funky50" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Funky50</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/funk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>funk</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a></p>
