Rasmus "raek" [rɛːkʰ] SA5RJSI've just started to read A Grammar of Ayeri (a <a href="https://tilde.zone/tags/conlang" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#conlang</a> by Carsten Becker <a href="https://mastodon.online/@chrpistorius" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@chrpistorius</a>). I was very pleasantly surprised to find a whole section that compares the "trigger language" concept I've seen conlangers mention with proper linguistic research on Tagalog by Paul Kroeger among others. Wow!This is the culmination of a series of (re)discoveries of mine....In 2007 or so as a fresh student I picked up Paul Kroeger's "Analyzing Syntax" at a book sale just because I thought it looked interesting. I read parts of it on train trips the following years for fun.In 2025 after getting back into conlanging I started re-read it more seriously. I dicovered information theory (topic and focus), but also the Indonesian language, which the book frequently used in its examples. This made me aware of the concept of Austronesisan Alignment. Cool!I then discovered his "Basic Concepts in Information Structure: Topic, Focus, and Contrast" article and also his "Analyzing Grammar" book (which I wish I had discovered way earlier!). When I tried to make sense of what the promoted argument meant in Tagalog (subject? topic? focus?) I found that Paul Kroeger had written his dissertation about exactly this topic (which luckily can be found as a PDF online). And it had a bunch of useful tests for determining if something is a topic or focus, etc.Now, I tried to think about how to apply this to a conlang. And then I discovered the Ayeri grammar, which has a section that's basically a commentary on Kroeger's dissertation from a conlanging perspective! What a treasure for conlangers!Now I'm definitely going to add a table to my conlang grammar comparing my conlang to Tagalog and Carsten Becker's Ayeri (see page 283)!A Grammar of Ayeri: <a href="https://ayeri.de/grammar/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank">https://ayeri.de/grammar/</a>

Toki Pona has a number of grammatical morphemes which mark<ul><li>a verb's object (e);</li><li>a complex NP or DP (if you count pronouns and numerals separately from nouns; there are no articles, possessors are adjectival) as an attribute of an NP/DP or VP (pi);</li><li>an ordinal numeral as an attribute of an NP (nanpa).</li></ul>These all look to me like functional heads taking an NP/DP as a complement. For this reason, I'd (naively?) propose classifying them as prepositions of a "functional" kind.However, this suggestion has been met with resistance and criticism on the grounds that<ul><li>the textbook doesn't classify them as prepositions (this is dogmatism and thus a weak argument, IMO);</li><li>different from prepositions (lon 'in, at, on', tawa 'to, towards', etc.) they have no lexical meaning;</li><li>as a consequence, they can't be negated;</li><li>different from prepositions they can occur in subject NPs—PPs are restricted to adverbials.</li></ul>So, what gives?
