'In a new study published in Citizen Science: Theory and Practice March 28, researchers from the University of California, Davis, show that citizen science data from iNaturalist and eBird can reliably capture known seasonal patterns of bird migration in Northern California and Nevada — from year-round residents such as California Scrub-Jays, to transient migrants such as the Western Tanager and the Pectoral Sandpiper'

🌼This weekend (10-14 april) is the Dutch National bee count, where citizens are encouraged to count bees, wasps and hoverflies in their garden or neighbourhood. Knowledge of bee population is important because 80% of edible crops and almost 90% of wild plants are pollinated by bees and other insects. In the Netherlands 34 bee species have already disappeared and half of the 360 species are endangered.

This was my fourth time participating and this year we counted more wasps, hoverflies and bumblebees, but no other types of bees. I wonder if the drier weather was of influence 🐝🌼

#LostBones #FossilFriday! 🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟🍃 In a 1945, C. R. Stauffer documented the discovery of a tarsal bone from an ancient horse, possibly Equus caballus, uncovered in October 1939 in glacial deposits 31 feet below the surface during well drilling in Marshall, MN.
Pleistocene horse specimens are rare in Minnesota Check out Lost Bones #4 (profile link) for details.

The European Citizen Science Association has created a Mastodon account (@ECSA), but they have haven't posted yet.

They just announced at the annual general membership meeting that they are planning on starting to post to Mastodon soon.
