Here are the young ones, Cleo and Jette, doing a sphinx impression on top of our chicken playground on a rainy day 🤭 The four of them are now living as a group. The leader, Henna, is sort of a benevolent autocrat who leaves the little ones alone and doesn't mind them coming close. But her second, Stella, is still power-drunk and keeps bullying the underlings when they dare go near the food and snacks. Well. I guess it will stay that way until the little ones are grown up and fight back. 🤷 In the evenings, Cleo and Jette go inside the shelter themselves now, so we have established a new normal where I only have to check occasionally. DoomsdaysCWSo, my neighbors have added to their flock -- but now the smell is getting a bit stronger. Since I've talked to the neighbors about how I grew up around ducks and chickens, they know I'm not squeamish about all that. But there are ways to manage one's manure pile, and I'll plan on having a friendly discussion with them. Lime is readily available at the local hardware store, and given their lack of space, probably the best solution. But any other ideas would be appreciated (enclosed composter? pine shavings?).Help! ~meoralis~I was trying to take a photo of a small and beautiful viper's burgloss that popped up in the garden and was photobombed by a curious Jette 😂 By the way, the four of them are in the same coop now and rub along okay together. The adult hens still bully the little ones whenever they're too close, but Cleo and Jette are feisty and curious and explore more and more. ~meoralis~Right then, plot twist! 😅 My husband got in touch with the farm where we bought our <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/hens?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#hens</a> last year, asking if they had any <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/chickens?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#chickens</a> available. Turns out they did! So, meet Cleo and Jette, who've now moved in. We wanted to get two new hens of a different breed (but with similar characteristics), but seeing as we'd have had to wait another couple of months, we decided to go for the same breed again so the other two wouldn't be on their own for so long. ~meoralis~As I was telling you earlier, I borrowed a Sony Alpha 6000 to see if I like it better than my old Sony DSC-RX100 which I never use anymore because it's so frustrating. Guess what, I don't like the Alpha 6000 any better. It feels nice, but the autofocus is as fickle as the RX-100 one and everything is blurry, even when I used a tripod. But of course you only see this later on your computer (I haven't installed any apps to transfer images because it's not my camera). 🤡 I had really hoped that the autofocus experience is a bit better with a new model, but I suppose there's no way around a specialized (macro) lens. Both cameras are great for landscapes, but when it comes to close-ups or macro, they don't work for me. (I'm aware that the problem is behind the camera) Is there any camera brand/model you would recommend for beginners? Tyson, Chicken Rancher 🐓Yesterday, I lost my second chicken due to being egg-bound. This is the second chicken to die of this in a month. They are both three years old, different breeds (Delaware and Gold Sex Link). Really kind of a bummer. One of them was the leader of the flock and a personal favorite. She's in the header of my profile. RIP, Milk. For the first one, I only figured out what was going on too late. By the time I brought her in and started trying to help her with warm water, she was on death's door. At least she died with me there. I had rescued her from a wild animal and she's loved me ever since. For the second one, I recognized the symptoms earlier and brought her in for a proper epsom salt bath and lubed her vent, but she didn't pass the egg after a while so I returned her to the flock. I should have been more patient. Yesterday, again I think it was too late. She didn't have enough strength left to pass the egg. RIP, Hashbrown. Anyway, kind of a bummer but you learn as you go. They still had great lives. It's ironic because I'm planning on picking up three new chicks tomorrow morning. <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/backyardchickens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#backyardchickens</a>
