Justine SmithiesHad nothing better to do than add shadows to my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=waybar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Waybar</a> . Idle hands and all that jazz. 😄<br>

Space Hobo<p>Here's a screenshot of my <a href="https://teh.entar.net/tags/swaywm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>swaywm</span></a> setup. I spent probably far too long on the <a href="https://teh.entar.net/tags/waybar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>waybar</span></a>, but I like the sliders for volume and brightness.</p>

Mika<p>Welp, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/PewDiePie" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PewDiePie</a> has opened the floodgates to the <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Linux" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Linux</a> community now that he's <b>actually</b> done a full video explaining his move to Linux, why he did it, and why he thinks others should ditch <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Windows" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Windows</a><span>.<br><br>I honestly expected a </span><i>nothing burger</i><span> video with not much meaning/input to it, esp to someone who's already on Linux, but his points were pretty interesting. Some of his takeaways:<br><br>- He was tired of </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Microsoft" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Microsoft</a>'s bullshit concerning ads, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/AI" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#AI</a> slop, and bloat - and how he really supports the idea of <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/FOSS" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FOSS</a>, and gave the example of how cool it is that <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Valve" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Valve</a> saw the issue on putting all of their/our eggs (shares) in Windows' basket and addressed that by building on top of an existing FOSS project, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Wine" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wine</a> to then develop <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Proton" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Proton</a>, which as a result has unlocked and enabled the expansive <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/gaming" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#gaming</a> scene that we have today, not just for the <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/SteamDeck" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#SteamDeck</a><span> but all Linux users as a whole.<br><br>- He, surprisingly loves the customisation aspect of Linux and how everything is modular - which meant we could change things like the GUI (desktop environment) and customise it as desired. He even (appropriately) used the term, </span><i>ricing</i><span> lol.<br><br>- He, even more surprisingly, loves the fact that there are many Linux distros to choose from - when some find this to be somewhat a </span><i>hurdle</i>. He highlighted how you should just pick one and move forward, which is often true - this choice doesn't really matter as much these days (if ever). His choice was <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/LinuxMint" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#LinuxMint</a><span>, the distro he's tried 15 years ago.<br><br>- He noted how, like anything, Linux isn't perfect and there may be sacrifice(s) needed - like how some apps may only be available on Windows, for </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/macOS" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#macOS</a>, and likewise for Linux. His <i>sacrifice</i> was <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Adobe" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Adobe</a> <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Photoshop" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Photoshop</a>, but he was happy to ditch the thing (which costed him 60 USD just to unsubscribe), and his chosen alternative was... <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/GIMP" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GIMP</a> - I know some might not agree, but he liked it 😂<span><br><br>- He mentioned how searching (locally) on Windows is garbage, and everyone knows that's just... objectively true. Like him, I too was amazed how local search actually JUST WORKS and is super fast on Linux, unlike on Windows or macOS.<br><br>- He noted how goddamn easy and intuitive installing/updating/managing apps are on Linux by using the system's package manager (app store), rather than having to look up the app installer online and dodging all of the shady sites with malwares and so on.<br><br>- As if this wasn't enough, Pewds really went down a fucking rabbit hole, almost putting to 'shame' for most, all </span><i>average</i> Linux users (incl myself) by literally installing/using <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/ArchLinux" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ArchLinux</a> on his laptop, which is normal, 'cept he's not using a regular DE like <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/KDE" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#KDE</a> or <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Gnome" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gnome</a> but he instead, opted for a tiling manager, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Hyprland" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Hyprland</a> with <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Rofi" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Rofi</a>, <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Waybar" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Waybar</a><span> and all lol.<br><br>Anyway, it's a pretty cool video - and I underestimated Pewds' love for tinkering and using the terminal, so much so that I hope his users don't think that they </span><b>actually</b><span> need to use the terminal for the things he did haha.<br><br></span>▶️ <a href="https://youtu.be/pVI_smLgTY0" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/pVI_smLgTY0</a><span><br><br>RE: </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/notes/a4q9yw9w5i" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://sakurajima.social/notes/a4q9yw9w5i</a></p>

Adam Harvey<p>I've been playing around with <a href="https://github.com/YaLTeR/niri" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Niri</a> as a Wayland compositor for the last few weeks, as opposed to my normal Sway. It's nice!</p><p>Anyway, I decided I wanted a more Niri-specific taskbar module for Waybar, and ended up using Waybar's CFFI interface to build one in Rust, which turned out to be (mostly) fun.
