TIL That after the Caledonian Star encountered a #Roguewave on 2nd March 2001 and the extensive failure of the on-board electrical system caused by it, especially the complete navigation on the bridge, #Captain Karl-Ulrich Lampe first navigated with a magnetic compass and according to the moon and stars. Later he used a hand-held navigation device intended for excursions with inflatable #boats

Hi friends. 👋 It is Saturday. I’m kind of tired & can’t think of much to say. I may deadhead my rosebush later when temps cool, otherwise I’ll be staying indoors #today. In yesterday’s self-defense class, we learned how to use our elbows to wreak havoc on an attacker. I never realized how powerful elbows can be.

Did you know that if you straighten your arm, your lower arm bones naturally extend from your #elbow at a slight outward angle so they don’t hit your body when you walk?

Hello everyone. 👋 It’s Tuesday. I woke up feeling anxious, snarky, and impatient #today. But my pest control guy has already been by to spray for spiders & remove a small wasp nest for me, so that helps me feel calmer.

It is likely to #hail later, so I’m going to set up my homemade hail nets over my flowers & hope for the best.

Speaking of hail, #TodayILearned from NatGeo that the largest hailstone ever recovered in the US fell in S. Dakota in June 2010. It was 8” in diameter & weighed ~2 lbs.

Hello friends. 👋 It is Monday. My area has a break from the heat this week, which is likely to be replaced by daily afternoon rain, hail, and thunderstorms. That is our usual “monsoon” weather pattern, although it feels a bit early this year.

According to the National Weather Service, the word “monsoon” comes from the Arabic word “mausim” or “mawsim” which means “season”. So when we say “monsoon season”, we are actually saying “season season”.

TIL that Android offers a "read aloud" option in the context menu when text is selected. I somehow never noticed that before, but double checked after learning that iOS can read selected text. Turns out that Android can too!

But I've been told that the iOS "read selected text" option doesn't show up when fancy unicode pseudo-font text is selected. Is that really true? Because if I select the following "text" in Android, it reads it to me perfectly:

Fancy UNICODE text test!
𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐃𝐄 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭!
𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗢𝗗𝗘 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁!
𝐹𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑈𝑁𝐼𝐶𝑂𝐷𝐸 𝑡𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡!
𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘜𝘕𝘐𝘊𝘖𝘋𝘌 𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵!

I am curious if there's some way to get iOS to read such "text", since it's pretty common (and I had the impression that iOS usually does unicode better than Android).

The "fancy unicode text test" is copied from this post by Brian Swetland: chaos.social/@swetland/1100136

Hello friends. 👋 It is Sunday. It is very hot and windy in my area. If your area is also experiencing extreme heat, I hope you are able to stay cool.

#Today I learned that heat is always transferred from hot to cold. So if you feel cold, it’s not because something (like an ice cube on your skin) is giving you coldness. Instead, your body is transferring its own heat to the ice cube. You feel cooler simply because you are less hot.

#Science blows my (very simplistic) mind.

Combined Public Service Announcement and Today I Learned: if you have `CLICOLOR=1` on macOS, if you do an `ls` of a directory which is inside iCloud Drive, evicted files (i.e., those that cannot be immediately used, but need to be downloaded first from iCloud) show with a grey background… see below:
First, both files are in iCloud, but not locally available. They have a dotted cloud icons in the iCloud Status field of the Finder window, and a greyed background in the output of the `ls` command.
Second, the `cssday.pdf` file shows a filled circle with a down arrow as part of their iCloud Status, which represents the "Keep Downloaded" option (i.e., the file has been downloaded and is locally available), while the other file keeps the dotted cloud icon. In that case only the `Screenshot…` file is shown as grayed out in the output of `ls`.
