I finished up teaching 2 week neon and STEM class at Urbanglass on Friday. The high schoolers were from all over NYC with varied backgrounds/ schooling and they all made such fun things!
Along with my two TAs (Caroline and MolMol) we taught them not only how to wire and bend neon tubes, but also how to solder (SMT and through hole) and the very basics on programming captive portal ESP32 chips for blinking neon with phones.
We played games, Including making a 30 foot mega straw for fruit punch, competing with three glass an food coloring "rollercoasters" as well as numerous "drop test" contests to test/ build bend/ weld strength.
Overall they learned about planning, perseverance and some the hard lessons of loss that glass can teach so well when the thing you make breaks.

One student quoted Don Quixote "Without hardships there can be no Adventure!" - couldn't have said it better myself :)

Had a good morning running my last monthly community coding session in the small town library before a break for the Summer. We did Scratch games and python robots. Had time to give plenty of 1:1 coaching to the kid doing the python. #STEM

Letters to a Prescientist (LPS) volunteer registration is open!

They will probably close it in the next few days, so I'd suggest registering today if you want to participate. It's ~10 h of time over the course of a year and since you write letters you never have to be available at a specific time for things like zoom (unless you volunteer to do that in addition to writing). They are very well organized and their online system was good for uploading copies of your letters (in addition to mailing a handwritten one). They maybe go a little overboard with the reminder emails about when you have to send a letter, but they also include lots of helpful writing prompts and things.
