Maggie Maybe
This is one of the worst articles I’ve read in a while. I’m not sure why this person decided to write an article about disability that they didn’t research beyond historical context. (it’s so Janky there isn’t even a date on it. I thought the reference to 2016 was a typo and they meant 2026 until I went to make a comment and saw that it was from 2013. Lol oops.)

I don’t understand why they are perplexed about how a disability determination is made that would be easy enough to look up online without even having to talk to anyone.

They’re genuinely confused about how one person can have diabetes that doesn’t affect their job and another person can be disabled by diabetes which makes me wonder if they even understand there’s a type one and a type two and they are both very different.

If they truly believe that a sitdown job can be done by people who can’t lift they should go look at some of the help wanted ads. I was looking for those types of jobs for years. I’m not supposed to lift or carry more than 10 pounds but for some reason trying to be a paralegal or admin assistant I was required to be able to frequently lift 50 pounds. What?

But it was interesting to see them acknowledge that in times of record unemployment disability applications go up. I don’t think that’s people scamming I think that’s people with limitations who need accommodations realizing that when there are record numbers of people applying for jobs employers aren’t going to choose the person with health issues. Shocking I know.

I’m pretty positive this is why it took so long for me to get approved. I applied in January 2013 and the economy had still not fully recovered from the housing market crash. What was happening in 2012 was that people were starting to max out their unemployment in the area I lived in, so I guess the disability determination unit in the state decided that I was applying for disability just because unemployment was running out.

Also this author clearly has never heard of the ticket to work or trial work period amounts. Lots of people on SSDI work because we can without it affecting our benefits as long as we don’t earn more than like $1100 a month this year. Even people on SSI work because the SSA doesn’t count the first $25 or something that they make and then after that they only withhold one dollar for every two dollars earned.

And yeah if I’m a single parent with a kid with major health issues I’m not going to be able to work because I have to take care of that child. That’s why people get disability for their kids. Not because they are afraid their kids aren’t earning money in first grade, it’s because when they have to leave work in the middle of the day to pick up their child who bit someone else or hit a teacher or had a diabetic reaction that almost put them in a coma, their boss doesn’t like that.

I don’t even understand the point of them writing that people on disability don’t get raises, we actually do every January. And it’s pretty equivalent to what I used to get for raises at work. $.50 an hour, yeah that works out to be about what my disability COLA is if I was working 40 hours a week. I guess this “journalist” never heard of COLA?

But what SHOULD be fixed is that full time on minimum wage is SO LOW that it’s actually below the substantial gainful activity amount that would determine your disabling condition actually disables you. I don’t think it’s supposed to be set up in a way that if I earned minimum wage I would automatically be making such a small amount I would qualify for disability. That doesn’t seem right but that’s how it is.

Sorry for my rant this is literally the worst article I’ve ever seen written about disability because they refused to do any research about what the program entails.

Unfit for Work: The startling rise of disability in America | Planet Money https://apps.npr.org/unfit-for-work/

#NPR #SSDI #SSI #disability

Paul Chambers🚧
Someone sent me a copy of a letter they got from SSA to ask me if this #SSI notice from #SocialSecurity has a new requirement.

The requirement, "Notify [SSA] if your bank account balance goes over $2000"

I can't recall if notifying them if your bank balance reaches $2000 or more was there before DOGE, it's been more than a decade since I represented people in SSA appeals, but I do remember you must report certain changes within 10 days of the month.

This "notify if your bank account balance goes over $2000" seems punitive and ripe for abuse, or confusion at the least for everyone around, including local SSA office workers. Some months, people get double benefits because of the way the first falls on a holiday. Meaning, this months benefits and next months during the same month (not extra as in additional). Also, some bills take longer to be withdrawal, like if you write a check, say for a bill or other expense, and they are slow to cash it. Your balance may reach $2000 to no fault of your own or new assets or income.

Having to report something like this seems like they are just trying to force people off benefits for going over the asset limits, esp when there wasn't a change in resources or income coming in. Of course, if you hoard money above the extremely low assets amount, that is a significant reporting requirement and a no no. That is why people on SSI can never have a safety net for things like their cars breaking down, or emergency money.

My advice is, if your bank account balance reaches $2000 any time of the month, report it or else they might use that to punish you with an enormous amount of overpayments or worse. Banks and SSA talk to each other.

Maggie Maybe
Speaking of the references on your original student loan application, you might not remember doing this but you would’ve had to give them two people’s names and addresses and phone numbers, one could be a parent but I think you had to choose someone else for the second one. If you are old like me it’s extremely unlikely that that person still has the same address or phone number they had when you went to school.

But if you are a more recent borrower and you would be terribly embarrassed if that person got a phone call from your lender saying you didn’t pay your loan, anyone used as a reference for these loans has a right to have themselves removed.

20 years ago that person could just call the servicer and request this, no identification confirmation necessary. If a borrower would call in upset that we had called their reference, if I went ahead and noted the reference called and asked to be removed I could delete them. But if the borrower were called in pretending to be the reference I wouldn’t even know. Deleted.

Don’t let this crap ruin your life. Also if you are #disabled you can have your loans forgiven. I’m not sure if that part of the program has changed since I did it, but back in 2014 if the SSA had not determined you were disabled but your doctor says you are, your doctor can sign the form and submit it with minimal medical records.

They took my mom’s tax refund her whole adult life. Once she finally told me they were keeping part of her #SSI (see I am just a girl so boomer mom thought I didn’t know about money) I had her sign a form and a few months later she was free from them.

#StudentLoans
