Some good news on my side concerning #selfhost, #selfhosting

I successfully moved my #self-hosted family site to a new server using #Yunohost, thanks to their relentless feature additions and support. I host personal data like photos, emails, and documents to maintain control and avoid risks associated with third-party services. My old server had limitations in disk size and speed, so I decided to upgrade.

Here's what I manage through Yunohost:

Nextcloud: I use it for photos, videos, and documents. It's integrated with mobile apps and office suites, making it a great replacement for Google Drive and Photos.
Email: I set up my own domain for family emails, using Yunohost's diagnostic tools to avoid any issues with spam.
OnlyOffice and Collabora Online: I installed both for document editing within Nextcloud.
SOGo: This serves as a webmail client for easy email access.
BorgBackup: I use it for automated, space-efficient backups of all my apps.
AdGuard Home: This blocks ads at the DNS level, improving my home network experience.
Matomo: I use it for analytics on my open-source projects, replacing Google Analytics.
Custom Projects: I've developed a CORS proxy and maintain Dont-code services for web applications.

The migration process involved several steps:

I disabled AdGuard on my router to prevent internet issues during migration.
I set up SFTP access on the old server to transfer backups.
I installed Yunohost on the new server with a temporary domain.
I backed up and restored system settings to the new server.
I migrated user accounts and application data progressively, updating DNS settings for each domain.
I took special care with emails and photos to prevent data loss, including placing Nextcloud in maintenance mode.
I encountered and fixed a Unicode issue in Nextcloud's database during restoration.
I ensured BorgBackup functionality on the new server by updating SSH keys.

The migration went smoothly over a weekend, thanks to Yunohost's tools and community support. The new server performs better, and everything is back up and running. I'm pleased with the results and the improved performance.

My servers and services are humming along nicely since quite some years that way. email server, web server, my Forgejo instance, uptime monitor, some little tools — all managed with a terminal and some shell scripts. The most expensive part of my #SelfHost setup are the domain names renewal fees ;)

It’s Doony

My GoToSocial instance has been running for almost 2 months now, and it’s been a great mini-project.

It took some time to gain traction, but now there are over 5300 instances in its sights, and more everyday.

Which means it’s easier for me to find and follow more people.

Certainly, it’s harder than just joining an established instance; and with only 64 followers (at the time of writing), my reach is limited.
However, this should start to grow more organically as I follow more etc etc.

Self-hosting has been interesting for me to undertake.

I’m not a “techie”, so launching into the world of VPS, and Yunohost (which is the service I use to install apps such as GoToSocial) has been a real learning experience.

@DismalManorGang If you #selfhost stuff, you probably have #nextcloud. It’s the rock solid foundation for so many selfhosted ecosystems. In that case Joplin supports WebDAV. So you don’t need a special Joplin server if you have a working Nextcloud server (I think). I am not a heavy #Joplin user. But I’ve used it enough to set it up this way.

It works fine for me, but since I’m not a power user, I don’t know if maybe there’s something that doesn’t work as well this way.

I am so very tempted to get a mini-pc to replace my old, big, noisy and power-hungry desktop turned server.

It'll entail a minor loss in storage, but modern mobile chips can easily deal with an intel CPU from 2011 (14 years ago), so compute isn't much of a concern.

The box runs a bunch of containers, so RAM is a limitation (especially when soldered) but 16GB can fit a lot of optimized containers.

Ein Projekt zum selber hosten, das eine saubere Übersicht über deine Garantien bietet. Mit einfachen Zugriff auf Herstellerinfos, Anzeige wie lang die Garantie noch gültig ist, Handbuch etc...

Ich finde es schön gemacht und der Dev ist sehr freundlich :neocat_floof_cute:

Estoy pensando experimentar con XMPP en mi servidor personal. Estuve leyendo sobre Prosody, pero quiero tener más opiniones respecto de la facilidad de implementación y mantenimiento, uso de recursos, actualizaciones, implementación de features, etc.

I'm really torn. I love me my @coop, great people, great model, love to support and use.

Buuuuut, I'd also love to use my own domain so I can truly own my own social. However I’m concerned about a single user instance not seeing all my current interactions.

Any advice from you self-hosters? I'm trying out fedihost.co, a Canadian provider.

@dannotdaniel @mgarvey My experience installing #PiHole an #RPi 3B was also painless. What took more effort was finding the right blocklists to add. As you can imagine, there are a set of long-lived sites to block as well as new ones that popup all the time. Some lists are very specialized (e.g., malware) and others more catchall. I have settled into a handful of lists that do a great job. Just to share, my hosts lists are in the pictures, attached. #selfhost #privacy

Leider war die Hardwarebeschleunigung in meinem damaligen Test-Setup nicht optimal, was den ersten Versuch mit Jellyfin scheitern ließ.
