There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.
For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 188 (REAL self-hosting edition) 👻

Hello Fedi friends,

I hope you had a nice weekend.

I spent the vast majority of the past two months in full time filmmaking mode, for my Fedi promo video.

Now that the French (https://news.elenarossini.com/fedivers-video/) and the Italian (https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverso-video/) voice-over narrations are complete, I can finally resume my self-hosting adventures.

On the agenda for later this week: updating the version of my Ghost installation, which is something I am genuinely self-hosting, without the help of YunoHost...

I already did it once a couple of months ago, but now the stakes are higher because I'm getting hundreds of visits every day (since publishing the Fedi promo video).

Second item on my to do list: figuring out how to log onto #NextCloud from my mobile phone (the iOS app keeps spinning when I enter my server name).

I'm just really grateful to be able to do all this... A mere 6 months ago it would have seemed impossible.

Wishing everyone a great day! 🌞

More self-hosting work this weekend:

I have seven open source projects currently hosted on GitHub; eventually I'll move them off, but that will take some effort. However, all of them have CI workflows which produce OCI (container) images which are used to run linters and tests (so that those operations will run more quickly and repeatably), and I'd been hosting those images on quay.io.

This weekend I reconfigured those processes to publish and consume images hosted on my Forgejo server (using its 'Packages' feature), and deleted my account on quay.io. I have a Fastly Delivery (CDN) service in front of Forgejo, so I had to do some learning about how to make that work, which I'll get published in a blog post Real Soon Now.

Images are now live at forge.km6g.us/km6g/-/packages, and while I haven't done a scientific experiment, it appears that the Actions jobs which use these images actually start faster than when the images were on quay.io.

KM6G Software ForgePaketeForgejo is a self-hosted lightweight software forge. Easy to install and low maintenance, it just does the job.

ok, so my work to get closer to being more 'decentralised' as far as tech goes, gets closer to the end.

* self hosting my family mail including calendaring and contacts
* self hosting files and pictures
* self hosting DNS
* self hosting VPN.

All using opersource of course.

Biggest challenge was setting up the local and offsite backups and making sure that it is all actually recoverable - lots of testing...

So what should i focus on next ? Suggestions ?

Some good news on my side concerning #selfhost, #selfhosting

Thanks @yunohost

I successfully moved my #self-hosted family site to a new server using #Yunohost, thanks to their relentless feature additions and support. I host personal data like photos, emails, and documents to maintain control and avoid risks associated with third-party services. My old server had limitations in disk size and speed, so I decided to upgrade.

Here's what I manage through Yunohost:

Nextcloud: I use it for photos, videos, and documents. It's integrated with mobile apps and office suites, making it a great replacement for Google Drive and Photos.
Email: I set up my own domain for family emails, using Yunohost's diagnostic tools to avoid any issues with spam.
OnlyOffice and Collabora Online: I installed both for document editing within Nextcloud.
SOGo: This serves as a webmail client for easy email access.
BorgBackup: I use it for automated, space-efficient backups of all my apps.
AdGuard Home: This blocks ads at the DNS level, improving my home network experience.
Matomo: I use it for analytics on my open-source projects, replacing Google Analytics.
Custom Projects: I've developed a CORS proxy and maintain Dont-code services for web applications.

The migration process involved several steps:

I disabled AdGuard on my router to prevent internet issues during migration.
I set up SFTP access on the old server to transfer backups.
I installed Yunohost on the new server with a temporary domain.
I backed up and restored system settings to the new server.
I migrated user accounts and application data progressively, updating DNS settings for each domain.
I took special care with emails and photos to prevent data loss, including placing Nextcloud in maintenance mode.
I encountered and fixed a Unicode issue in Nextcloud's database during restoration.
I ensured BorgBackup functionality on the new server by updating SSH keys.

The migration went smoothly over a weekend, thanks to Yunohost's tools and community support. The new server performs better, and everything is back up and running. I'm pleased with the results and the improved performance.

mic check 1 2… is this thing federated?
Hello lovely people of mastodon!

I figured right now is a great time for a #intro

So, hi! My name is Virgil and I'm a big fan of #selfhosting, #golf, #photography, and #computers.

In other hobbies, I play a lot of #wowclassic and then working on my #homelab.

I finally made the commitment to jump full ship on to mastodon and host my own server for my family and friends.

I'm running out of characters, but thank you for hopefully reading this.

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 186 (bandwidth edition)🚦

A moment of gratitude for #VarnishCache and how incredibly it has protected my self-hosted #Ghost blog from the so-called "Mastodon stampede" / "Mastodon hug of death":

Yesterday I published a page on my site with the French-language version of the Fediverse promo video https://news.elenarossini.com/fedivers-video/

Then I posted a message on my Mastodon account about it, asking people to boost it, so that people in the Francophone world could see it.

How many boosts did I get? 1300 so far (you people are amazing).

Well, my Ghost blog is still standing and super fast. Varnish is INCREDIBLE and I could not recommend it more.

Oh and my VPS with PeerTube is also still standing because I embedded the French version of the video on my Ghost site, so that hundreds of Mastodon servers attempted to fetch the cover image of the POST and not the cover image of the video.

Bandwidth consumption (for my VPS with GoToSocial and PeerTube) so far this month: 0.457 TB (my limit is 8 TB)

Bandwidth consumption for my VPS with Ghost: 0.06 TB (limit: 4 TB)

So far so good 😅
