What we shipped so far in 2025

Alongside our upcoming plans, we’ve already shipped several important features in recent releases. Here are some highlights of what’s now available in the ActivityPub plugin.

Onboarding

We’ve added an onboarding flow after plugin activation to help guide new users through key decisions — such as selecting the Actor Mode.

It’s also a great opportunity to explain Fediverse concepts for users who are new to them.

#activitypub#fediverse#move

The 2025 #roadmap for the #ActivityPub #WordPress #plugin aims to finalise the full ActivityPub experience for WordPress:

🧩 Seamless #publishing, #following, #reading, #interacting, and #moderating within the Fediverse.

🏆 Key areas of focus include implementing following, improving actor modelling, enhancing moderation tools, developing a Reader experience, and exploring Direct Messages and a Client-to-Server API.

Our 2025 Roadmap: Building the Future of WordPress Federation

We’re excited to share this roadmap — there’s a lot happening with the ActivityPub plugin, and we can’t wait to show you what’s coming next.

We often refer to this roadmap in GitHub issues and discussions, but until now, we haven’t published a full roadmap post — nor a formal changelog. This post is a first step toward keeping the community more informed about what’s planned and what’s coming up next.

Our goal for this year is to finalize the full ActivityPub experience […]

Hey Fediverse! 👋
Two weeks have passed and here we have another update from the BadgeFed burrow! Here’s what’s new, brewing, and how you can jump in if you’re feeling adventurous.

Early Bits of Decentralization

We’ve started the very first steps toward decentralization! 🛰️ Right now, we’re planning to add two more test instances to push federation further.

That said—there are still no controls for blocking, defederating, moderating, or deleting yet. So we’re not opening it up publicly just yet (BadgeFed isn’t ready for the wild west).

BUT—if you’re comfortable around SQL and servers, don’t mind losing data, and want to help us test the early messy bits, let us know! We’d love to have more fearless testers on board.

OpenBadges Export is Live! 🎉

Big milestone: you can now export your badges to OpenBadges format!

This is a huge step toward real portability. Right now, you can only export badges tied to profile URLs (think Mastodon profiles, etc.), not emails yet.

That means you can’t directly import them into platforms like Badgr or Credly (unless they someday support URL-based verification).
We’re going to push for that—because identity shouldn’t be chained to an email address.

Also: we have zero interest in storing emails. Privacy first. Always.

UX/UI Improvements + Search 🔍

A few small but mighty improvements:

  • New search page! Now you can search your past badges easily.
  • Badges are now an attachment to a regular ActivityPub note, instead of a separate document type.
    • We tried doing a new document type, but… Mastodon just ignored it.
    • Like it or not, we need to be Mastodon-compatible to reach people. But attachments are a fine way to extend the ActivityPub spec.

Little things, but they add up to a smoother experience.

Follow Other Issuers! (and Bridgefed!)

Issuers can now follow other issuers!
We think this is a critical building block for decentralization. 🛠️

Plus, if you follow Bridgy Fed, it will bridge to Bluesky!

Lots of Other Nerdy Bits

Under the hood:

  • Tons of minor improvements and cleanups
  • More internal support for federating badges across different servers
  • Prepping groundwork for instance-level controls later

Wanna Test With Us? 🧪

If you’re comfortable with:

  • Raw SQL
  • Servers crashing
  • Maybe losing everything 😅

…and want to help shape early decentralized BadgeFed, message us!

(Seriously, it’ll be messy but fun.)

Let’s make federated badges a reality. 🚀

Altbot™ Roadmap: What's Coming in 2025

Hello Fediverse friends! I'm Micr0, the creator of Altbot™ - a Fediverse bot that helps make social media more accessible by automatically generating alt-text descriptions for images and videos for people with visual impairments.

I wanted to share my exciting development plans in the coming months. Your feedback and support have been incredible, and I'm working hard to make Altbot™ even more helpful for everyone.

Version 2.1.2 - Coming Soon!

  • More Languages: Adding language support without message translations
  • Better Reminders: Making the system more helpful and less intrusive
  • Help Documentation: Creating a GitHub wiki with resources on using Altbot™ effectively

Version 2.2 - Audio Understanding

  • Local Speech Recognition: Integrating a local model like Whisper to process speech in audio and videos
  • Enhanced Media Understanding: Providing audio transcripts to the Ovis model alongside video frames for more comprehensive alt-text

Version 2.3 - Fediverse Integration

I'm thrilled to announce my first official partnerships with Fediverse instances! I'll be developing an API with direct integrations into Fediverse software, starting with:

  • Chuckya (mastodon) integration for fuzzies.wtf and wetdry.world
  • Sharkey (misskey) integration with plasmatrap.com

These integrations will make alt-text generation seamless for users on these instances, with more partnerships planned in the future. And anyone will be able to host their own Altbot™ for their instance as well of course :)

The speed of these releases depends on several factors: my personal motivation, support from the community, and my workload. Your encouragement, feedback, and Ko-fi support all help keep this project moving forward!
