An athletic midfielder has been on Manchester United’s agenda all summer, and Carlos Baleba was not the only target considered. But he has been at the top of the list, so there will be some internal debate now about whether to pivot to another No 6.

There is an appreciation for Morten Hjulmand, the 26-year-old Danish international who captains Sporting CP, Amorim’s old team. The pair had a strong relationship.

Adam Wharton is another who could come into the reckoning. But #MUFC will carefully weigh up whether to spend more money at a time when they need to make sales. Baleba presented a special opportunity, and making a move for a midfielder is not guaranteed.

Carlos Baleba is not the finished article. Why would he be at 21, after two seasons in the Premier League at Brighton and a handful of senior starts for Lille? But the growth in his game and confidence levels over the last year is palpable.

As last season progressed, there were notable improvements in Baleba’s fitness, stamina and concentration levels — signs that he was maturing into a high-class Premier League player. All of which attracted Manchester United this summer.

But, while Brighton would have been reluctant to lose Baleba with the transfer window close to closing, next summer could be different if Baleba’s progress continues.

And, should #MUFC retain their interest, they could find themselves in a long queue of admirers. At Brighton, there is an acceptance that, with the strong possibility of a bidding war, that would be the time to sell.

Since Ruben Amorim’s arrival in November 2024, Manchester United have looked like they are lacking the physicality to operate in the 3-4-3 shape and the principles the Portuguese head coach wants the team to abide by.

Fast forward to #MUFC's opening game in the 2025-26 Premier League season against Arsenal, and United have looked sharper off the ball.

The timing of their forward jumps looked better, there’s no hesitation when being tight to one of the Arsenal players and United won more duels in midfield.

The improvement in intensity and physicality doesn’t only help United out of possession, but it also creates more transitional opportunities for them.

More than once in the first half United won the ball back and quickly switched the play towards Bryan Mbeumo down the right side, or carried the ball forward and had an effort on goal like Patrick Dorgu, who struck the post in the 30th minute from an offensive transition.

Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is in advanced talks to sign for West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan.

A host of Championship clubs have registered an interest in Collyer but West Brom appear to have won the race, with the structure of the deal agreed.

The West Midlands club believe the 21-year-old can aid their push for promotion to the Premier League under head coach Ryan Mason.

Benjamin Sesko is a striker with sky-high potential, but there is a considerable risk when signing such a player for a club like Manchester United.

Despite interest from Newcastle, Sesko wanted to join #MUFC. His move to Old Trafford is now confirmed in a deal worth €76.5million (£66.4m) and €8.5m in add-ons in place.

Are Manchester United right to be paying such big money for the 22-year-old?

On the back of Manchester United's worst domestic showing in half a century, with no European football on the horizon and, just five months ago, an owner claiming the club would have gone “bust at Christmas”, one might have expected a quiet transfer summer at Old Trafford.

No chance.

Three of #MUFC's most expensive ever signings have arrived this summer...

Marcus Rashford is on his way to Barcelona after an agreement was reached with Manchester United for a season-long loan.

United have given Rashford permission to fly to the Catalan capital to start the next chapter of his career, with the deal including an option to buy.

Rashford had targeted Barcelona as his ideal destination when it became clear he would leave United in January, and that ambition is now being realised.
