@nullagent @nullagent in my local hacker/activist community, we are working really hard to get people to ditch Meshtastic in favor of Reticulum, including building out our own local mesh network with it. To amyone that has been sold on the promises of Meshtastic, I'd definitely recommend you do the same!

The security/encryption of Reticulum is far superior, and the feature set is far more complete (it can be used for text, voice calls, hosting websites, TCP/IP tunneling, really anything), it can interoperate on way more radio protocols than just LoRa (including many non-radio protocols), and the development team seems far more committed to FOSS and anti-corporate ideals.

It also doesnt use flood-routing, unlike Meshtastic, so the network gets significantly more efficient as nodes are added, rather than getting bogged down the way Meshtastic does.

Thank you for putting this info out there, it's very refreshing when so many out there are parroting Meshtastic's marketing materials on its security while simultaneously advocating its usage in high-risk environments like protests.

I Built a $20,000 Military Router for $106.23
By Data Slayer

“The Military contacted me...

I reverse-engineered a $20,000 military IP mesh radio using just $106.23 in open-source parts. This isn't a gimmick—it's a fully functional MANET router capable of push-to-talk, GPS sharing, ATAK integration, and more. In this video, I’ll show you how I built it, tested it, and deployed it in the real world—no subscriptions, no middlemen, just raw decentralized power. Whether you're off-grid, mission-ready, or just sick of Big Tech, this changes everything.”

And now I have #MeshCore on my #Heltec

That makes me a happy man. Except of course I still live out in the sticks and am not close enough to anyone to actually see them.

But I shall be trying both #Meshtastic and #Meshcore to see which gives me anyone to chat with.

Thanks to everyone who gave helpful comments. I fully accept that I didn't need to compile anything to make this work, but there were several options along the way that might have needed that.

Also...

1. The instructions mentioned nothing about #Linux need me to join the #dialout group
2. I had to reset the #heltec into bootloader mode. This might have been as it was pre loaded with #meshtastic, but that would have been good to know.
3. I had to change the baud rate on the UART connection using #Putty
4. I had to install a #Chrome based browser that I really don't want to have.

But it was a fun task and I've learned a fair bit. 🙂

Whilst I love almost everything about #Linux, there is one thing that really does piss me off.

Why can't I just download software? Why do I have to download source code and compile it? I'm a techy. I still write software for a living, but never on Linux and when I do have to compile drivers etc, it never f#cking works! Always libraries missing or compiler differences.

I know that #mesh, #meshtastic and #meshcore are still really only for people who kinda know what they are doing, but apparently I'm not one of them.

If you write code for #Linux and you give it to people to download, #&$!^ compile it for us! Loads of people do, but far from everyone.

Disaster! The package arrived and it's something else, entirely unrelated!

This means that I'm probably going to have to wait until tomorrow for delivery.

Devastated.

I guess the silver lining is that I do now finally have the cap that Yodel are convinced they delivered two weeks ago, even though the evidence points to them delivering it to someone else who lives almost 5 miles away.

Time to distract myself with something else techy.

Having just seen a post mentioning #mesh, #meshcore and #meshtastic I was forced to look into what the hell these are.

I love this stuff. Things that others have been developing and using for years and I finally stumble across it. I have of course already ordered my first device and am waiting, very impatiently, for it to be delivered.

The problem is that I live out in the sticks so actually being able to use these things is a bit of a long shot.

I can see that the next purchase could well be a serious repeater station so that I can actually communicate with anyone else at all.

Just have to wait and see.

I've been busy as hell this past week.

A lot of people have been asking hard questions about the security of LoRa systems when they hear about mesh radios.

I'm not one to trust the marketing so I and several friends put together two new LoRa tools to help us audit the security claims of LoRa mesh systems!
